Hey Guys
Had a really bad day at the range with my sporterized Moisen 91/30.
Got it dialed at 100 yards with factory ammo PPU 150gr dead on 3/4'' group 5 or so rounds then went to a clean target and all bad 10'' groups.
Gun seemed fine all tight scope all good Ol'most seemed like once it warmed up started going or the ammo.
Getting ready to reload for it want to use IMR 4064 with either 150gr fmjbt
or 174sprn flat base.
What is your thinking on this? also should we run it near the max or slow it up a bit.
Also on fri shot my scoped saiga 21' barell .308 with mid volisity reloads 165grhp molly coated Hornady jobbers the best reloads EVER at 100 yds less then 1'' moa now I shot 30 or so and 3 or 4 were outside that.
Nothing makes me happier then quality reloads at 20% the cost of factory.

Don't know how much help this will be, but I load the 200 gr Sierra GameKing .308 bullet over 45 gr of IMR4350. I get 2138 fps and 1 1/2 - 2" groups at 100 yds in my M44.

I don't see any point in pushing for high velocity in this cartridge.

Slug your barrel first. Usually Mosins need a .311 diameter bullet. I tried .308 in mine and had horrible accuracy and gas blow back.

M91-30 Mosin-Nagants (not Moisen BTW) do tend to get sloppy as they heat up. The barrels are thin and heat fast. I'm assuming you mean the first group was 3" to 4", not 3/4ths of an inch. The variation may also be related to a change of ammo.

I'd suggest testing a bunch of different factory and surplus loads before doing much work on handloading. You can determine what that particular rifle prefers.

I had great results with Speer .308" 150gr SP with 47.0gr of Varget. Runs 2370 fps out of my M38 Mosin. I was getting consistent 1.25" groups at 50 yards.

I had horrible results with Hornady 150gr FMJBT in .308" with the same 47.0gr of Varget. Couldn't hold 4" at 50 yards.

Next up, I plan to try some 123gr .310" SP and some 150gr .312" Hornady SP in it. My rifle slugged .3125". I was surprised how well the Speer loads did and how poorly the FMJBTs did.

Have fun trying out new loads for the old workhorse.

What size are the PPU bullets??? Does anyone know?

IF they are 308, then that would explain the accuracy issues.

Well the first box of factory 150grPPU was the same lot# as the second this is what has me baffeled also the scope issue I guess it could be but I have the same scope on my .308 Saiga and have sent maybe 1000+ rounds right through the paper but i went to a second box of ammo on the second target that was 1ft below my zero.
I tell you for a few rounds I was king.

I have a M-38 Mosin Nagant.I use a Sierra 150 gr..311 bullet Winchester brass,Winchester large primer and 46.3gr. of IMR 4895 COL 2.910" works for me.
