I personally think the "7.62x93" would be a hell of a sniper round.

Move over .50 BMG.:D

7.62x39mm is way too usefull to be obsolete any time soon. I'd bet it'll still be used to some extent or another 100 years from now.

In civilian life, it's like an autoloading .30-30. In military service, it's chambered in so many rifles, (which are still being manufactured), and the round itself is still being developed (self-defense loads, hunting loads, AP, etc.), that it won't be made obsolete anytime soon.

Yesterday I shot my SKS and another person next to me told me that the ammo I am shooting is drying up and the best thing for me to do is sell my Russian SKS and buy either a AK 74 of a AR rifle. Anyone else herd that X39 ammo not going to be available?

I think there should be a thread stickied in every forum titled "don't believe anything Joe Schmoe tells you at the range / gun store and the first post should say "See title"

Well, it really isn't that good of a cartridge. However, some of the most popular rifles for simply wasting ammo are chambered for it. It is cheap and people shoot a lot of it. I doubt it will ever go away. Unless people realize how stupid AK's are.

And I don't even own an AK. ;)

7.62x39 quality

So how is the quality of 7.62x39 these days? I was told that it was bad these days?

Quality? Depends on what you're getting and from what manufacturer. Time was there was a lot of old and odd 7.62x39 ammo around. A great deal of that old surplus stuff seems to have been shot up (or is no longer being imported like some of the Chinese stuff).

(No more lacquer coating, from what I've seen. And that's a good thing.)

These days you're most likely to see Wolf or Brown Bear, which is new-manufacture, non-corrosive, commercially made ammo. It's not "match grade" per se, but it is consistent and reliable.

I'd say it is better than what was common for lower-tier stuff 10 years ago. But it costs about twice as much, too.

How can a cartridge be obsolete if several countries still use it as standard issue? Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, etc. all still use 7.62x39 last time I checked.

That is not very High Road...

I guess I am one of the stupid ones then...

A 7.62 X 93 would really have a big case bottom and hold a heck of a lot of powder...wounder what it would look like?

Perhaps kinda like a bottle of Break Free?

It's soviet, so it needs a rim

It isn't a great cartridge if you want a full-power rifle round like .30-06. It can be a great cartridge if you want something halfway between a .30-06 and a 9mm, or comparable to a .30-30.

How much experience do you have running the AK platform?

Hey Miss Debbie did he offer to take that Russian sks off your hands since you wouldn't be able to feed it anymore. Methinks he had ulterior motives.

Considering most of the world builds or imports the AK47 or SKS as a primary or secondary military arm, and the AK47 is the one of the most common long arms in the world, and there are probably hundreds of millions of them in use, I doubt that production will be ending anytime soon. Importation maybe, but then it would just be produced in the US.

Zero chance of x39 drying up out of proportion to any other common caliber. If you cannot find x39, things have gotten VERY bad!

rumor has it the russia is going back to the 762x39 anyway.
Rumor has it that Lenin is coming back to revive communism in the fmr. USSR.

^...and that is about as likely as the extinguished supply of x39...though 7.62x93mm has always been illusive. :D

Huh?

Please elaborate. I'd say that it's probably one of the best, if not the best, all around caliber based on weight, performance, cost, and availability. Outstanding for self defense, hunting medium/large game, combat and a great penetrator. Light enought to comfortably carry a combat load.

why would the 7.62x39 dry up? its like fool proof and idiot proof. It is like #1 world wide used gun ? I think. AK-47 everytime I watch movies someone has one of them. Even kids!

That other guy is right. Maybe he just wants your gun for a cheap price. I heard some crazy things before.

Speaking of which, does anybody know if there's any truth to the Russian manufacturer of AK's facing bankruptcy?

Yeah. Same story as Detroit. SImilar government mentality. Company goes under, govt. bails them out. Don't worry. They'll be popping out rifles for a good long while after we're all gone.

Those sneaky russkys (grammar police please correct) keeping the 7.62 X 93 hidden from the free world all this time! :scrutiny:

was that shoehorned into an AK or a SVD?

I like it...yeah, I like it a 7.62 X 93...has a nice ring to it! Bet it's harder than hell on a barrel! But the ballistics! :what:

Kind of like the 338/50 Talbot!

I say we start the national federation of the '93' shooters!:)

Its a different rumor every week. Next week it will be .223 again.

The latest I heard was that I should sell my 1911s and buy Glocks because with the ammo companies are only making NATO ammunition.

I hate to say it, but sometimes I almost believe it. I go to wal mart three times a week just to look in the ammo cage. Plenty of 9mm, .223, and .308. Never any .45 ACP...

The 7.62x39mm is a GREAT cartridge if you want a low-recoil round with sufficient energy to kill a whitetail or pig at 150 meters. It's also good for S/HD for even a bit further. The 7.62x39 is probably an even better choice for beginner rifle than the traditional .243 Winchester.
