Hi everyone, this is my first time on this awesome site. This place is pretty awesome. Anyways, I have acquired a 742 in .243. I have done a search and didnt come up with anything, but does anyone have assembly/ dis-assembly instructions? Preferably idiot proof with pictures and what not.

I have it completely dis-assembled, but after dis-assembliing the bolt, I had 1 pin and 2 springs (not talking about firing pin spring) that came from it that I am unsure about. I know where the pin and one of the springs goes. They are from beneath the thin metal latch thing.

The pin and spring to the rear are good not. BUT in the front there are 2 holes side by side, beneath the thin metal latch thing.

#1 does it go in the angled hole to the forward or the one right behind it?

#2 It seems like there should be a pin in there. Am I right?

Also, If there are no dis-assembly instructions with pictures let me know soon enough and I will do a HOW-TO with pics on it.

Yep, my first posting on here too, been reading for weeks, but it sounds like you are in a pickle. Sorry to say- this is one gun you should maybe never take appart. There is a volume of soft cover books called 'firearms assembly and dis-assembly'. you need the 'center fire rifle' copy. They are around used for 15-20 bucks. Atlease be carefull to not break or bend anything- or lose it when a spring goes west- if you do a search on these particular rifles... parts are rare, and remington is like an auto company, they would rather you buy a new one that fix the old one. For now, search for 'wiesners gun parts', he has a lot of blow up parts diagrams - don't know about for 742's, for now, keep searching and see what you find online till you find a book- good luck.

Numrich Gun Parts Corp. has a schematic of a 742 and a parts list with pictures http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=4340. This link should take you directly to it. If for some reason it doesn't work just go to rifle parts, Remington, 742.
I find the action bar, spring, and tube the biggest pain in the [insert body part here] to reassemble. Whatever you do don't whack the end of the gas nozzle. If you peen it closed the gun may short cycle due to not enough gas to operate properly. If you do peen it closed private message me, I'll look up the hole diameter and tell you how to fix it.

Gunsmiths hate to take those things apart when they need repair. I have no idea why anyone else would even try when they don't. Good luck.

I am no gunsmith by any stretch, but I do have 10 years in the army taking apart all the guns that I have used. That doesnt do me ny good on this thing though...lol

Taking it apart actually isnt that bad at all if you have any mechanical know-how or common sense at all. Re-assembly may be a pain though, yet to see. The only concern is that it appears to be a pin short (bolt latch pivot pin{thanks for the diagram link kenneth}).

I will do a how-to thread on the next one I am working on. I have 2 in possession. A buddy had 2 of them and asked me if I could try and get one of them right, and I could have what was left over on the other. Fortunately so far all I am in need of is the charging handle and the bolt latch pivot pin. We will see. Thanks for the help.

your 2 prings are for the bolt lock. You should also have 2 very small plungers the ride on top of the springs. Look where the flat hooked-nosed lock slides into the bolt and you will see the two drilled holes for the springs and plungers. Put the springs in first, then the plungers and finally the lock. One of your plungers is rounded on one end; this one goes in the rear hole with the round up. The flat one goes in the front hole..
