87 Grain RNSP In 30-30

The local shop has a good many 87 grain Hornady round nose soft point bullets for sale. The box says Mauser but they are sized 0.308. Has anyone tried them in a 30-30? The lightest bullet I have data for is a 110 grain round nose, so I’m kinda flying blind. I’m not looking for super high velocity. They are just available and relatively cheap at about half the price of 150 grain round nose. I wouldn’t hunt with them. My 30-30 is my tinkering gun. Manual action makes it easier to try different loads without cycling worries.
 
My .30-30 likes .310 powder coated bullets.
A .308 will most likely not be accurate and will lead your barrel.

I have loaded 110 gr to 2300 fps with good accuracy. 87 gr would be fun, if they shot well.
Powder coating would get them .309-.310.
 
Hornady doesn’t even list them on my reloading app. I’ll have to check their website. These have just been sitting there for months. I don’t think anyone has bought any. I’ll investigate further. There are about 1000.

They’re probably for 7.63mm Mauser pistols. The old Broomhandles. Should be fine for a .30-30 using 110gr jacketed data. There’s not that huge a weight difference. Just start low and work up until you get good accuracy.
 
I have loaded a ton of low power light bullet plinker / target loads in bottle neck rounds for my TC Contender.

One of my favorite was a tumble lube 55 gr NLG in 30 Herrett.

I played with a bunch of powders and found that I liked the fast burning stuff best. Think powders like AA #2, Red Dot, Clays, TightGroup, etc. I tried Unique and did not like it at all.

87 grain Hornady round nose soft point bullets
The 30-30 neck can hold 2 bullets at a time. First one goes in nose first, 2nd normal. Butt to butt. When i was young & fearless, i loaded Hornady 110 gr jacketed spire points . Both hit the target.
Do NOT try this.

I have loaded Red Dot for years in both rifles and handguns.

Those velocities don't seem right.

The predictions above are for loads that are very much outside of the "normal" parameters where Quickload seems to do pretty good. With small charges of fast powders in rifle barrels, I think the software tends to overpredict velocity as there seem to be losses that matter but are not modelled. Another factor is ignition. With all of the free space in the case, actual ignition can easily be less effective than the model predicts. Still, for someone working up plinkers, the Quickload output provides some guidance on what to expect.

I looked up some old chrono data and found results for some 30 Herrett loads with Promo (bulk version of Red Dot).

With 4.6 gr Promo under a 110 gr plinker in a 10" gun, Quickload said 1123 fps, chrono said 1118 fps
With 5.0 gr Promo under a 110 gr plinker in a 10" gun, Quickload said 1168 fps, chrono said 1160 fps
With 5.4 gr Promo under a 110 gr plinker in a 10" gun, Quickload said 1215 fps, chrono said 1195 fps

With 6.4 gr Promo under a 150 gr Lee in a 10" gun, Quickload said 1172 fps, chrono said 1142 fps

With 6.4 gr Promo under a 150 gr Lee in a 14" gun, Quickload said 1251 fps, chrono said 1190 fps

Note the above a chrono numbers are "as indicated", screens were probably at least 12 feet from muzzle.
 
Curious if your looking at the new 30 super carry projectiles. .309 90 grainers is what I've seen.

Maybe but I don’t think so. These have been sitting on their shelf since before it was announced, well back into 2021. I emailed hornady but haven’t gotten a response yet.
 
I am figuring .30 Carbine in 7.5" Blackhawk should be equivalent of .327 Fed.

Make a fun 50 yard coyote and varmit cartridge.
