870 barrel

Will a 870 express barrel fit a 870 wingmaster?I want th get a 18 inch barrel and pistol grip for my wingmaster and turn it into a riot gun.

Unless someone knows something I don't, a Remington 870 barrel is a Remington 870 barrel and doesn't care about the model.

When you go to buy it ,it says it fits the 870express.

Not quite true. There seem to be a lot of 870 Special Field barrels floating around these days, 21" VR RemChoke barrels IIRC. The SF version has different dimensions than typical 870s and the SF barrels will not fit Wingmasters, Expresses etc as the barrel ring is in a different location.

Other than that, given the same gauge and receiver code, barrels will pretty much interchange with no problems. It's possible to put 3" chambered barrels on 2 3/4" receivers (and vice versa) but that won't make the gun capable of handling 3" shells. And so on...

I watched a guy try to 1 hand a 3" Mag in a Mossy with a pistol grip. Luckily he was smart enough to only put in the one round, because when he touched it off the Mossy ended up back over his shoulder facing the truck we rode in to the range. His wrist and shoulder were VERY sore after that.

Of course, we, as true friends do, laughed our butts off.

Mossberg makes a short barrel for the Remington 870 that will cost you only $99. It's probably worth looking into since it's about $40 cheaper than a Remington.

I saw that moss. barrel at cheaper than dirt for 89.00 I didn't know if it would fit because it said for remington 870 express

according to the 870 owners manual: All Model 870 barrels are interchangable without adjustment, except the Model 870 12-gauge Super Magnum and Model 870 12-gauge Special Field.

So this means remmington says it will fit.

I was under the impression that the later production 870 express barrels do not have the spring/ball detent to secure the magazine cap.
