870 Ejection Problems

I've got a new 870HD that has been having ejection problems. It's very weak and will sometimes pull the shell and drop it straight down upon ejection. This happens whether I "push-pull", "pull-pull", rack hard, or not as hard. I think it happens on any shell in the mag.

It will also sometimes hold the shell and sorta turn it around backwards before it ejects it. So I'm thinking that the extractor is holding the shell tightly enough, but the ejector needs some kind of adjustment.

It's had a break in of maybe 250-300 shells now and will still not positively eject minutes after a thorough clean and lube. Here's a pic of the inside:

Any ideas on how and what to adjust?

Warranty - make Remington fix it is my first suggestion.

It is realy hard to say without further, and close inspection. Your ejector and ejector spring seem to be intact - there is no adjustment on these parts. The ejector is the solid U shaped bar that is rivoted to the inside of the receiver, the flat ejector spring looks to be in proper shape and has tension to the right toward the ejection port. All looks OK ?

I once saw the same problem on a NIB Police model.

The extractor was fouled with a combination of grease and rust, probably caused by improper factory cleaning after being parkerized.

Disassemble the extractor, spring, and plunger.
Use a pipe cleaner and some solvent to clean the hole in the bolt.
If it's impacted with crud, try a tiny bottle brush and solvent.

Inspect the extractor for damage.

Clean and re-lube the extractor, the spring, and the plunger and reassemble.
Test again.

I just did that. I'll probably take it out again next week.

What do you think is the mechanical issue? That the grease/fouling is keeping the extractor from bending and releasing the shell off the ejector?

Ditto to the extractor being the cause. Pic of the ejector looks fine. In addition to the little plunger sticking, extractors have been known to break off part of the tip/lip.
