I finished up another 870 build tonight and I thought I'd share a few of the latest pics of the collection. All of these guns started life as beaters, rusty and pitted old truck guns. A hacksaw, sandblaster and some KG Gun Kote has brought them back to life. 870's are like belly buttons...everybodys got one and everyones is different.......heres a few of mine. The colors are "satin OD green" , "flat dark earth" , "satin dark earth" and "satin black" .

Very nice!
I did notice that they don't seem to have a lick of wear on them.
You should take them out and show them some love!
 
Your hard work has paid off. I have an opportunity to pick up an old 12 gauge from a pawn shop for 150 out the door. It's got the safety on top just like a Mossberg so I assume it is. But it says SEARS on the barrel. I think it's SEARS I loked at many so not quite sure. But if not SEARS then Western Auto or some other off name. But it is old and I'm thinking of getting it for 150 and keeping it for beating around.
Please tell me how you went about painting or refinishing the metal. I'm sure you didn't just apply paint but instead used a specialized coating. I've never done someting like this before so I'm curious. Any pointers will be appreciated.

What length are the barrels? What length are the mag extensions?

18.5 ish. the ribbed baarrels I had to fudge a little bit to get an even cut with the rib. All the extensions are TacStar 2 round.

KG GunKote.....they get love. The black one is the only one that hasnt been fired since its new skin.

How well do those recoil reducer stocks work?

They work decent. The coyote in the pics with the standard stock is my favorite though

im likeing the od green one alot! and augustino: that sounds to be a western, cant remember the model but it is basically a mossberg 500

Yes, it was done by me. I can honestly say it makes more of a difference that the Knoxx stocks. I can fire slugs and buck one handed with little to no muzzle rise ( here comes the nay-sayers ) . It was an experiment that proved to be very beneficial. I dont think I have enough confidence to try it again though.

The metal parts are first block sanded to remove any pitting if necessary. Then I take them to my wifes sink and give a good toothbrush hot water scrubbing with dawn to remove any grease and grime. From there they go into the sandblaster with 70 grit aluminum oxide. After sandblasting I blow them off with compressed air again degrease with a heavy duty laquer thinner wash. Preheat parts to about 150 degrees and get ready to spray. I use a DeVilbiss DAGR airbrush to apply unthinned KG Gun Kote to the hot metal. Once the KG dries to the touch they go in the oven for one hour at 325. Let them cool to the touch, then I wipe em with CLP and reassemble.

Most inmportant tip: once you scrub them with dish soap never allow them to contact bare skin. Always use powder free rubber gloves. I also lay them on fresh masking paper while I work before I spray them so no grease, grime or oil gets on them from my counter tops A good pressure washing with non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner is a good way to final clean right before Gun Kote application.

Patterns? Never patterened them. What kind of patterns does anyone get with 18.5 inch cylinder bore shotguns? Good enough for across the room. Far as slugs.......I always seem to hit what Im aiming at with them......and thats really all that matters to me.

I just read this post and Im sorry if it seems kind of brash.:evil:
 
I looked at your shotguns and loved them. I was ready to go buy a piece of junk and give it a whirl until you listed everything you have to do. That's a lot of work amigo. It definately paid off for you though. They're beautiful.

Right on I was just curious because after seeing this post I was thinking that if I could find a good deal on a beater 870 I could saw it off and make a defense shotgun that maybe I would do it. My only reservation is how it would pattern-shouldn't matter for strictly in-home situations but it would be nice if I could shoot birds with it or hit clay pigeons, or shoot slugs accurately out to 25-50 yards. I asked because I've shot two sawed off guns at clay pigeons and couldn't hit anything with either one...and I'm a decent shot. The pattern just seemed to be too wide open for anything but in-your-face situations. Anyway no knock on what you've done, I think those 870's are sweeeeeet!

Shoot, to 25ish yard you wont have any problem at all hitting your target. I love shooting skeet, and with these scatterguns its hard to miss, Id say they hold it tight enough, long as you dont stretch the limits. Im gonna tell a story, and most readers wont believe it, but im gonna tell it anyway.

A while back me and some buddies were at the shootin hole and we brought out everything we owned. Well, we set up one of those 1 gallon glass apple juice jugs at about 175 ish yards. We measured all the way to the back of the range and its 220 yards, the jug wasnt quite all the way to the back. I was shooting the tan ported 870 and my buddy has my M1 carbine. He was triying to hit that apple juice jug out there at the 175. Couldnt get it. I made the tongue in cheek comment that "I could hit it with a slug before he hit with that 30 cal"......I was just talking crap.. He says "OK.." He shoots first....miss. My turn, I put the bead dead on the jug, the bead covered the jug about twice. Guessed distance and elevated the muzzle to what would have been about 3-4 feet directly over the glass jug..... Held tight, inhale, exhale, squeeeze, boom........ looked down range, and about a second later I saw that glass explode!!!! Holy Crap, couldnt do it again if I had to!

Just thought I'd share that. Slug accuacy at long range.

Nah...Its really easy. Just clean em good and keep em clean and you wont have any problems. And Brownells sells GunKote in aerosol I believe. Dont be Skurd.
 
Nice work! Not sure which I like the best, but they are all nice pieces! Kind of makes me want to stop by a local pawn shop and see if they have any shotguns in stock.....
