Hello all,

I hope I can find some help here, I tried searching for an answer to this questions but didnt find the answer I was looking for.

Question is, I have an 870 Express 18" barrel and 6 round magazine, because of wear and tear my magazine has gotten scratched and a little discolored. I called Remington but they would not sell me a 6 round magazine extension because they only sell that to LEO's.???? I bought it like that. I'm in California, so what is the standard magazine capacity?

I went out and bought the TAC STAR 7 round magazine but my stock barrel clamp with swivel stud does not fit with the TAC STAR magazine, the screw doesnt fit through because the magazine width is a tad bit larger. I want to keep the barrel clamp but add magazine capacity if possible but I dont want the magazine to be longer than the barrel. Basically I want a replacement and a backup.

Any suggestions on getting a stock 6 round magazine from Remington directly or is the Choate 2 round Magazine Tube Extension going to work? Does anyone know if the Remington stock magazine clamp fit around the Choate extension? I have tried researching the Choate but I don't know if it will be longer than the 18" barrel, i dont think that would be good.

Thanks for any help!

Flip,

Did you have to remove the dimples from your factory magazine tube? If so, how hard was the process?

My 870 Express (built in '95) has dimples which I'll have to remove unless the factory extension works differently than the aftermarket extensions.

Haven't made a purchase yet.

You need a different clamp. The Tacstar extension, which you already have, should then work out fine. The Remington clamp is designed to fit in a groove, which is present on a Remington extension, but not on aftermarket extensions.

The standard mag tube capacity (w/o extension) on an 870 is 4 rounds. A 2-round extension will be about the same length as an 18.5" barrel.

Here's another clamp, Advanced Technology (ATI), which may also work: http://www.shootnhunt.com/catalog/JM/gun_accessories/shotgun_accessories/1019137.html

Tank's also carries a small variety: http://www.tanksrifleshop.com/remshotgun.htm

i have a rather new model 870 whch i had for about 1 year, it had the dimples and i had to remove them to put on the extenstion, i used a dremel tool, and some very fine sandpaper to smooth it all out. i hav ran that shotgun hard since then and i have had zero issues.

Mine didn't have the dimples. It started life as a 6+1 HD so the mag tube was already set up for extended tubes. I've done after market extensions and clamps and the factory piece is what works best for me. The extension has a groove towards the end that the cross screw of the clamp goes though. This keeps the clamp from walking up the barrel under recoil.

One more thing!

Here's a link to Remington's parts PDF.

http://www.remington.com/pdfs/rempartslist.pdf

Page 70-71 has all of the extensions and extension parts listed there. You might just want to call remington and say "Hey I just need a replacement extension tube for my 870 home defense" If that's what you have. Replacement tubes are 24.65.

Hey, thanks everyone for helping me out with this, it's much appreciated.

Looks like I'm going to try Remington again for the mag extension and also pick up the TacStar clamp.

This guy is a small new Canadian producer of 870 accessories and I believe he is making +2 extensions that are similar to the stock Rem extensions.

I'm not sure what the price is and it's not yet listed on his web page but he's got some other interesting things available....
