Hello folks,

Just ordered a new 20" barrel for my 870 and decided to get a Choate +3 magazine extension to go with it.

From what I have heard the barrel clamp that comes with the Choate doesn't hold up that well.

How has your Choate barrel clamp held up? Also, who makes the best barrel clamp for the 870? I would like to get one at least as back up for the Choate clamp.

Thanks.

The best barrel clamp made is the Remington factory model, BUT, I'm not sure it will work with non-factory extensions due to the interlocking groove in the factory extension tube.

However, there is an exact copy made by Uncle Mike's that will work on any extension.
This is what I use and recommend:

The Choate clamp is OK, but does tend to move down the barrel under recoil.
Tighten the screw up to prevent this, and the screw strips out quickly.

Speaking of the barrel clamp, see the sling swivel button in that Uncle Mike's clamp? The Remington clamp has a hole there too, but I've never been able to find a swivel to fit in there. Is there anywhere I can get one by itself, or even as part of a set? Will that Uncle Mike's set's button fit into the Remington clamp?

I found this out after only a couple of range trips. I now have a replacement screw holding it in place.

Tank's has a Remington style clamp-

Someone (can't recall who, can't find it) once made a solid steel machined clamp that was about as bulletproof as possible, it was in reality more of a barrel band. Anyone recall the one I'm talking about? Brownells used to stock it.

Lee, I think you're referring to the Clark Custom Guns magazine tube clamp - see here for details. I agree, I think it's the best I've seen yet. No sling mount, but that can be fitted between the barrel retaining ring and the extended mag, using one of the GG&G units.

Tank's doesn't actually make their barrel clamp, they purchase it from Uncle Mike's.

The Clark clamp is nice, but ......brace yourself for sticker shock.

Thanks, Preacherman. My old rememberer doesn't work as well as it should I'm afraid. Sticker shock is right, but these things are definitely solid- literally lifetime investments.

Since they didn't advertise it as Uncle Mike's I figured Tank's was having it made up for them, or doing it themselves. Didn't mean to mislead, I haven't bought that particular item from them but the stuff I have gotten that they made has been good.

Everthings good about the Clark clamp , except the price.I have remington clamps on Rem tubes on most things, but the Clark clamp is on my 'special little friend' !:)
