:)Helo everybody , I`m new in this forum.
I hunt with a Remington 870 Express , I love it , but it has a sticky chamber. I read in some other forum about this , they call it rough chamber and said that was a problem of the express model only .....wich I have.
The case is that I tried to polish the chamber with steel wool wraped on a stick and attached on a electric drill.....and it gets worse....at first only some shell brands give problems , now almost everyone gets a stick hull in the chamber. Please some one that have fixed this problem in a 870 tell how to polish properly the chamber of my express.
Sry if my english is not good....thanks.

I would try some 000 steel wool with some fine/medium lapping compound, for at least 20-30 minutes. Really make it shine. If that still doesn't fix it, somebody makes a chamber lapping tool for the 870, I can't seem to find it right now though...

Maybe it's not a rough chamber...

You didn't mention the grade of steel wool that you used. I've polished chambers if the same fashion using 0000 steel wool and it has solved the rough chamber problem for me every time. If you used a too course of a grade you might have made the problem worse.

The problem may not be a rough chamber. Check the extractor to be sure that it's not damaged and also it's spring tension. A weak extractor spring has happened to my guns on a couple of occasions.....9x23

Skip the steel wool. It won't help. Use name brand Scotch-Brite pad wrapped and tied to a cleaning rod in your drill. Not store cheapo stuff. Name brand Scotch-Brite. Soak it in motor oil and polish for about five to ten mins. Don't change the pad and do over....that would be like going back to 220 grit sandpaper after you do the 440 on a nice piece of wood. The Scotch-Brite will change its grit as it wears down and leaves a mirror-polished chamber.

thanks a lot guys , guess i`m gonna try 0000steel wool , second option scotch-brite pads , if it not work there will be no more solution than wait fon de chamber hone of midway (I live in south america , so its gonna be a eternity waiting it to arrive jijijij) ......if neither of it work , im buyng another shotgun.

If it is so rough it is affecting function, why don't you contact Remington and ask to polish the chamber? Remington has been real good in the past standing behind their products.

10x: I`m from Chile , here the hunting season is OPEN , so let remington deal with it will be way too long for me , season dont wait for anyone :)

9x23 : Guess its not a extraction problem , in fact when a hull get stick the stractor dont let it go , so u cant open the action.

I've had this problem but only with Fiochi shells. So I'm pretty sure it was the ammo. You might try switching ammo and seeing if that helps

Rio, sorry I did not realize you were in Chile.

I have polished chambers using 600 grit sand paper wrapped around a shotgun bore brush. Turn this by hand only a few times, don't use a drill.
Check and see if the chamber areas look shiney and even in shine.

Got to the auto parts store and get a drum brake wheel cylinder hone for a 3/4" or smaller wheel cylinder and a can of oil, and hone that baby with an electric drill. Just be careful not to let the stones come more than halfway out the back of the chamber while turning or instant train wreck.

Rio, welcome to THR.
It almost seems like you have some sticky contamination built up in the chamber. What shells do you use? Are you using shells made in Chile maybe?
Please let us know.

NCsmitty: Thanks , I use spanish shells. When I first got the 870 thought some like this could happend and try few shells of some brands to see how they work , first try some Rio , they where ok , no problems , then I try Armusa AM2 horrible , from 1 box 12 sticks on the chamber (what a shame , the pattern was exelent & low recoil), the season was coming and began to use Rio. After about 1 year and very few but some sticky shells Iv try Saga export 30 & 32 (1 1/16 and 1 1/8oz. ) these just get along with my 870 & my Full choke , kill better than the Rio , like the Armusa but these dont stick up.....after 2 more seasons maybe 3....I read in some forum about these problem on the chambers of the express and gess with a little polish my express may take everything....but no , my poor polish of the chamber only make it worst and now even the Saga shells give some problems .
Must say Im very carefull with the cleaning of guns , always clean my 870 after hunting and if the hunt is for more then one day I take all I need to clean it in the field. But still some rust & dirt has built up on the chamber :uhoh:

10x: Do u use some oil on the aplication of the sand paper or just dry polish??

Thanks guys. After a secod steel wool polish it seems to be a lot better. On thursday try it on duck hunt , two doubles and 8 ducks with 9 trouble free shots :) ,and yesterday the real test , on a turtle-dove (cenaida auriculata)hunt two doubles and 50 doves with 130 trouble free shots:) , so I`m leaving it like this by now , when the hunting season get closed maybe some more polishing....

mmm looks like my second polish was not so good , today in dove shooting two doves were coming to my position.....get ready , stood up , aim one PuMM!! nail it , aim second one.....:uhoh: nothing , have to do a second attempt to rack it , the hull came out this second time, but the dove were flying over my head...my double has vanish :uhoh::banghead:

Chamber hone looks like last chance.

Might try a finish reamer first. There might be a ring at the rear of the chamber so it's got a reverse taper of some sort. I'd have to look at it, but that's the best I could suspect.

The flexhone chamber hone works.I could still see concentric rings in my Expresses chamber after using the steel wool. After using the flexhone the rings were gone.

May I use any gun oil in the aplication of the flexhone chamber hone??? ...or its better the one they recommend in the midways web page??

It voids the warranty if you use any other oil,the oil contains additives to prevent galling of aluminum,a moisture dispersant,a nonionic surfactant wetting agent, and a special additive to help keep metal cuttings and contaminants in suspension. That's what it sez right on the can.

After honing i would polish the chamber with a bore mop, few extra patches for a tighter fit, and some flitz or mothers metal polish.

Get an older Wingmaster or Express.:)
A factory shotgun should be expected to operate right out of the box.
It is shamefull that a Remington is doing such things and Remington needs to straighten up with their quality.:cuss:

Actually, the business model says all they need to do is keep the price low. We are now at the point where price outweighs everything, including whether the product works correctly or not. And, I am not kidding.
