So I picked up a older but great condition 870 super magnum special purpose.. Got a really good deal at the local gun shop during a 10% sale... What do you guys think of this gun.. Are they as reliable as standard 870's?

I have Supermag Wingmaster with 28" and 20" barrels. The ejection of spent 2&3/4" cases is kind of weak but the gun is very reliable. I had 12ga, 16ga model 31s and Wingmaster 16ga and the Supermag is actually nicer gun.

I can't think of any possible reason I would want to own one?

But if you're happy, I'm happy for you!

With 'Light Contour' chamber-less barrel it weights the same as new 12ga Wingmaster therefore there is no downside to owning one. There is no rule that states 3.5" shells must be used in it.

IMHO the 3.5" is great for shootng steel shot at geese, and hevi shot at turkeys and varmints. For anything else 2.75 and 3" is all you need. I love my Mossy 835, but it is my least used shotgun. If you want it, buy it, but the weight, and longer throw of the slide really kills it as an upland gun.
BTW 3.5" shells give brutal recoil, especially the Hevishot ones, be prepared, be sure to shoot several boxes at the range before you use the gun for serious work.

I'm bought it for a back up goose gun and a duck gun for real cold days No worries , recoil may sting being it's a pump but I normally shoot a 10g so I'm not to worried.. I have a shotgun for just about every type of hunting I do. So I'm not gonna use it for say an upland gun..
