I was at the range today and while I was talking to the guy that takes care of the range and handles memberships, he told me about a 870 that his friend wanted to sell. He said it was a 870 Turkey gun that his friend bought new a few weeks ago but now needs to sell it. He said that he only wanted $125 for it and it sounded like a steal so I gave him number and told him to cal me if the guy still has it.

I don't know exactly what a Turkey gun is but it sounds like something that I could use for trap. I have a 870 HD that I use for skeet but I have nothing to reach out there for the longer trap shots. What type of bbl and choke will it likely have? Would it make a good trap gun? I assume that it has something like a 28" bbl and full choke and is at least a 3" or maybe a 3 1/2" chmaber. It sounds like a turkey gun would alos make a nice trap gun but I am not sure what differences there would be.

A like new 870 for $125 is a steal. I wouldn't let that one slip away and besides you could probably get more for it on trade in the future.

Most of the "Turkey" 870s are fitted with 21-23", Remchoked barrels. These are shorter than dedicated trap guns, but certainly can be used for trap. All seem to have at least 3" Maggie Numb capability.

Trap guns tend toward longer barrels to help the swing.

Such an 870 with a few choke tubes comes close to that mythical One Gun For Everything.

$125 is a great price. Buy it.

i just checked out the Rem site, even if it is the 870 express, it looks like a great gun for the money. like I said, I have an 870 HD with a 18" non-choked bbl so even a 21" with some choke would allow me to get some extra distance on the trap birds. I am going to swoop on it if the guy calls me back.

Something tellls me that it will be gone by the time I hear from him again.:banghead: All I can do is sit and wait.

The guy called me back! It looks like it is going to happen after all! It is supposed to be like new so if it is anywhere near that, I am going to grab it.

Glad to hear your patience paid off- your instinct is spot on. Don't let it get away...

This whole thread makes me feel all icky inside. I did pick up a nice RemChoked 28" VR Express the other day for $144 though. My CURRENT HD gun is a Express Turkey with an extended magazine and Skeet Tube. That's 8 shots of 2 3/4" Magnum 12 Pellet 00 Buck loads followed by six more if the BG's give me enough time to reload. Loaded and sidesaddled, this gun must weigh 11 pounds or so. Nice soft recoil and that rib sure makes target acquisition a breeze. I can shoot skeet just fine with the short barrel too. Haven't tried Trap yet, maybe someday.
