Is there any cheap 8x57 or 7.62x54 ammo that does not have steel in the bullet? My local range does not allow anything that has a bullet that a magnet will stick to.

Sellier & Bellot (S&B) makes 8mm, .303 and probably 7.62X54 FMJ rounds, just like original military issue rounds.

I shoot S&B .303 FMJs out of my Lee-Enfield and they are solid shooting and quite accurate.

Careful with olympic in 7.62x54... I've had a great deal of ... erm.... variance.... in how hot those puppies are loaded. My experiences have ranged from near-primer-only squib loads to boomers that cracked the reciever and nearly kBed my gun. Buyer Beware.

I've never had that kind of trouble with Olympic but I believe it. I have noticed a lot of inconsistency in their ammo as well.
IIRC - Midway has Winchester 7.62x54mm ammo.

The problem with 7.62x54R isn't always a steel core, which they oft have (even though its mild steel and certainly not armor piercing) but the mild steel jacket.

The yellow tip is in fact steel jacketed. If you load your own you are really better off. Accuracy is much improved and you can control your product. Brass runs 31.00/100 and bullets are fairly inexpensive. Beyond that S&B makes pretty good ammunition for plinking though I've never been too impressed with it's accuracy.
