91-Year-Old Uses Cane To Fight Off Attacker

33-Year-Old Man Arrested In Case

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- A 91-year-old man was attacked on the street this week, but he used his cane to fight back.

Lincoln Johnson, of Lawrence, said he is bruised and sore from Tuesday's attack.
Johnson was sitting with a friend along a Lawrence walkway when a man came at them wielding a piece of concrete as a weapon.

"I don't know what was wrong with him, he was ranting and raving," Johnson told KMBC's Maria Antonia. "And he lifted (the concrete) over his head and came at us."
Johnson and the man fell to the ground during the struggle, and Johnson used his walking cane to protect himself.

"I threw my cane up, tried to block it and get by," Johnson said. "I didn't have time to be scared -- I didn't know what was happening."
Johnson's cane, which is a family heirloom, broke in two. His friend glued it back together, but it isn't as sturdy and Johnson must find a new cane.

Meanwhile, Johnson said he didn't tell his relatives about the attack until Thursday because he didn't want them to worry.
"I feel fine, just a little sore and stiff, that's all," Johnson said. "Just trying to get from one day to the next."

Police said a 33-year-old man has been arrested in the case. Charges are pending.
It is not clear what was the motive for the attack.

A solid wooden cane...the only weapon you can take on an airplane without being questioned too much. Its a 3 ft stick with a hook on the end, now in the proper hands that can be devastating, not to mention unassuming.

I should have a new Al one to show you guys soon. Heavy tubing, solid hook, knurled at both grip points.

I wonder is the older gentlman's address is available so we can send a new can to him?

I've got a spare hickory stock cane or two that have been sanded and tung oiled to a nice sheen that I'd donate.

HSO - that would be great. Finally some literal application to "Beaten with a hickory stick."

I've sent an email to the reporter offering to ship a can to any address for Mr. Johnson she'll provide.

I'm in to cover part of the tab for that, if you can get an address.

Otherwise there's an extra oak stockyard cane here too that hasn't been cut down to fit anyone, if you want it. I can open up the crook and put the usual not very pointed point on the horn, then sand it down and oil finish it. I'll even send along a crutch tip for it. Just let me know,

Before he passed away, Col. Rex Applegate, former hand-to-hand combat and firearms instructor for the O.S.S., was mugged by some punk. Col. Applegate caned the punk and thrashed him thoroughly.

Whacking someone with a cane is a lot easier to justify to the cops than stabbing with a sword cane- which is illegal to carry in a lot of states.

Why argue with success?

Well, fellas, if you've got a good cane you want Mr. Johnson to get here's your path forward. Mine's on it's way.

As for you guys that haven't been trained to use a cane, don't knock it until you try it.

Greetings Mike:

I sure hope Mr Johnson doesn't have to use a cane again to defend himself
against an attacker, but if you other canes you want to give him, I will
make sure he gets them.

Thanks,

Lincoln Johnson
