911 fails again. Good job to the Mom, that stove needed her.

It just makes you wish the guy playing basketball was armed. This does bring to mind a very gun-related question: When you are doing sports such as backyard basketball, do you stay armed?

Eight Year Old Girl Raped in Broad Daylight

WTSP Report

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (AP) -- An 8-year-old girl was raped on the side of a residential street in full daylight less than half a block from her apartment, police said.

Someone who witnessed the crime Wednesday afternoon chased away the perpetrator, who remained on the loose Thursday, police spokesman Bill Proffit said. The girl was treated at a hospital and released.

The girl was leaving a park at about 12:55 p.m. with her 7-year-old brother when a man grabbed her from behind, pulled her to the ground and raped her, police said. Their mother had left them alone for a few minutes to return home and turn off the kitchen stove.

A man playing basketball nearby said he heard the screams and ran to the scene. A motorist who witnessed it began honking her horn and dialed 911. The perpetrator got up and ran away.

Proffitt said police believe they recovered the man's shirt, which he apparently stripped off as he ran away, but they don't know his identity. People in the middle-class neighborhood say he may be a transient.

This is horrendously sad, but an honest question...Why do perps take off their shirts as they are running from a scene?

Always Armed

I'm always armed with at least a Cold Steel SafeKeeper 2 push knife.
If I'm outside alone doing heavy yard work, the pistol stays indoors, but a fighting knife is always attached to me. I don't play sports, so I can't comment on that.

Any other time, I have either a Ruger SP101 or a P90 on. If I'm outside with my kid, I have a gun on. No exceptions.

9-1-1 didn't fail, perps always ditch clothing to change their appearance, police can't always catch the badguys. Such is life. Wonder if they had a canine. Its possible the badguy ducked into a vehicle, or a nearby house. Could be a neighborhood resident. Hope mom learned her lesson. If an adult was outside near the child, it would never have happened.

Somekid, I find the sarcasm of the title of your initial post irritating.:barf: I don't know if you are a parent or not, but I highly doubt the mother thought anything would happen in that short period of time, especially during daylight hours. That being said, I doubt that I would have left my children by themselves while I ran home.

This mother will live with this forever and sarcastic parenting remarks won't make her life easier, either.

What moron leaves an 8 year old alone at a park. Even worse she had
her 7 year old brother with her. Two tragedies could have happened.

Their mother had left them alone for a few minutes to return home and turn off the kitchen stove.

The rapist should be caught, tried, and set on fire. The mother should be
charged with negligence and child endangerment. Only a fool leaves such
young children unattended.

Somekid, you may not know this, but 911 isn't magic. It is a reactive system for summoning help. Help doesn't start until somebody calls and then the correct help needs to be summoned. Help was summoned. Help came.

Why not just claim that screaming for help failed because nobody actually stopped the rape physically. They all just watched and one lady went out on a limb and honked her horn while calling 911. You hate to leave the AC. One guy chased the rapist after the horn bothered him.

This is horrendously sad, but an honest question...Why do perps take off their shirts as they are running from a scene?

Kevlarman is certainly correct in that is removes an identifying trait. Drawing from nature, it also does something else. It will sometimes draw the attention of an aggressor for a short period of time, maybe enough for the prey to slip away. Some cop in the chase will stop and collect the shirt as possible or known evidence. Many prey animals will urinate or deficate as a similar means of distraction, both being of strong odor that may attract and slow the predator that investigates. Some animals may squirt pheromone similarly. Simply put, it is a distraction ploy (from nature) and an attempt to be able to be unrecognized (from Kevlarman). The predator loses sight and the prey blends in with the local environment.

Rape Suspect Arrested
Posted July 20, 2006 at 07:34 PM

By ANTHONY MCCARTNEY
The Tampa Tribune

ST. PETERSBURG – Police have arrested an 18-year-old man suspected of raping an 8-year-old girl outside a city park Wednesday night.

Police arrested Henry Sengaroun around 6:05 p.m., police spokesman Bill Proffitt said. He will be charged with one count of capital sexual battery.

The victim and her 7-year-old brother were at Central Oak Park Wednesday with their mother, who returned to their nearby apartment because she remembered leaving the kitchen stove on, Proffitt said.

As the two children were using the slides, they noticed a man in the corner of the park at Dartmouth Avenue and 40th Street, Proffitt said. “Just the way he looked scared them,” the spokesman said.

The children decided to go home, but didn’t get far. Between the street curb and the fence to the park, the suspect grabbed the girl in a bear hug, threw her to the ground and sexually assaulted her, Proffitt said. The boy ran home.

The girl’s screams were heard by a man playing basketball a half-block away, Proffitt said. He ran up on the assault about the same time a woman driving spotted it and honked her horn as she dialed 911. The suspect took off and the man chased him, but lost him a block or two away, Proffitt said.

A neighborhood woman who later watched a newscast about the assault remembered seeing a man running and taking off his T-shirt at about the time of the rape, Proffitt said. The T-shirt is currently being processed for evidence, he said.

Mad Dog Rule

I wish for a simpler time when a person who commits a crime so evil that is hurts society to its core would be shot like a mad dog.
To Steve and his quote from Elinore Rossevelt. "You can always tell a Marine, you just can't tell 'em very much." Semper Fi from an old Retired Army Guy (ORAG) who loves having the Marines to wade in the water so we didn't have to.

Don't set him on fire,

Rape is a crime that justifies drawing and quartering. Against a child, no less? No, I'm not being feacetious by mentioning horrific ways to take someone's life. The executions should be public and often.

The rapist should be caught, tried, and set on fire. The mother should be
charged with negligence and child endangerment. Only a fool leaves such

I used to have the run of the neighborhood at 7-8 years old. Of course, we didn't live in St. Pete, but geez, you have to cut parents a break sometimes.

People wonder why kids and parents are so messed up nowdays when we are expected to be 10 times more protective and 10 times more empathic than our parents and grandparents ever had to be... instead of "give Tommy a whippin' for not doing his chores then send him out fishing with his friends for the rest of the day" it's "redirect his energy in a constructive manner, apply some positive reinforcement, and then supervise him carefully while he achieves some much-needed physical recreation on an OSHA-certified, non-toxic set of playground equipment. You need 2 incomes and don't have time to do all that while maintaining your housekeeping? You're a lousy parent!"

For all those who question my comment of 911 failing, that is all it can do. I know full well it isn't instant, or magic. If you read the original article, it notes that a woman in a car saw the rape happening, and only called 911. (Oh, she also honked her horn. That really protects the kids!)

i will carry when ever its allowed. Two places I don't carry, work and college. Work I always got a coal shovel or chainsaw in my hands, I think I can hold my own. College, I carry a cold steel full size safe keeper, no the best at edged weapons but I won't just roll over and die either.

well I must say that if I were to find some guy raping a child and I was armed (which I nearly always am), I don't think I would just let him run away :fire:

maybe that's not a justified shooting legally, but he would never do that again

This does bring to mind a very gun-related question: When you are doing sports such as backyard basketball, do you stay armed?

Sooner or later, the folks that sneer at my shoulder rigs will come around to the Dark Side.

Yes, I wear a gun, everywhere, during every activity except sex (guns always very nearby), showering (gun always in the bathroom) and swimming (which I don't do all that often)...for the very reasons illuminated in this thread as well as a few others.

2nd and 3rd graders? You think a parent should be within 10 feet of them every waking moment? I used to walk to school at that age, not so very long ago. And I had the run of the neighborhood on my bicycle.

If you read the original article, it notes that a woman in a car saw the rape happening, and only called 911. (Oh, she also honked her horn. That really protects the kids!)
Should she not call 911? And would you expect a woman to get out of her car to take on an 18 year old man barehanded? Especially since the basketball player was already running over? [Ideally she would have had a firearm and taken care of Mr. Sengaroun, but that's another discussion]

Your vitriol and sarcasm is misplaced, SomeKid. The only person at fault here is the rapist. Who should be executed immediately upon conviction.......

Guns can prevent a lot of crime ...

but this isn't one of them.

For all those who question my comment of 911 failing, that is all it can do. I know full well it isn't instant, or magic. If you read the original article, it notes that a woman in a car saw the rape happening, and only called 911. (Oh, she also honked her horn. That really protects the kids!)

The horn likely did as much as a drawn firearm. The guy got up and ran away, likely because of the horn. I'd guess he'd have done the same thing if someone had drawn on him (likely from a distance).

Cut the mom some slack. I can't stand monday morning quarterbacking. Hind sight is 20/20 or better. You are at the park and you suddenly realize your stove is on? If she doesn't high tail it back and the place burns down no way you'd be saying "well, she was right to stay with the kids, otherwise a strange man might have attacked them...". And this was likely what was in her head. (right or wrong). BTW, my mom's place burned to the ground a few years back with an unattended stove, so maybe I'm just a bit sympathetic.

I'm going to throw my hat in with the crowd with swift public retribution. There are some crimes society SHOULD deem dispicable, make this a class that is well defined. IMO, harming children is a no brainer. I don't care what the perp's upbringing, mental state or whatever excuses are used as "criminal defense", the crime and society should dictate something quick and painful. I think kids safe upbringing is worth it. But I'm no lawyer, and I do have kids ...

What moron leaves an 8 year old alone at a park. Even worse she had

Well, if you're ever in my town, you can ask a few of the kids what kind of morons their parents are. I see it all the time, and they've clearly not been taught not to talk to strangers, either.

No matter how many times it happens, there are still some parents out there who don't believe it'll ever happen here...again.

The only person at fault here is the rapist. Who should be executed immediately upon conviction.......

Again I politely disagree, carpet. Weeks of torture should be applied THEN execution.
