I've been looking for a '92 carbine, maybe .357 or .45 cal to use as an all around farm gun, maybe pop a few coyotes and an occasional wild pig. Would like to have one that is a true reproduction of the original. Seems they are available at a reasonable price but with a very non original safety on the top of the frame. Double that price and you can find one with no safety that looks completely original. Am I paying a lawsuit premium for the "no safety", or is there another reason for the higher prices? Or, have I missed one without a safety at a more reasonable price? We're talking $400 vs $800+ here. Thanks.

The pre-lawyer safeties seem to demand a premium because people like me want the older versions. The Kiowa Kid (StevesGunz.com) makes money on that as well by removing the unneeded safety that was forced upon the companies by legal tricksters.

If you can find a Browning B-92, they are about as close as you can get to the original. They made them in 357 and 44 mag. I have owned a few Rossi's which are not a true clone but look close. But they were not nearly as well made as the Browning copies.

Don't discount the Brazilian made 1892s. They are fine guns, they may just not be as pretty as the Italian or Japanese imported guns. The safety can be taken off fairly easily with just a small punch and the replacement plug from Steve's Gunz (Steve=Nate Kiowa Jones) goes in it's place. I have two in .44Mag and like them a lot. Steve hangs out over on Paco Kelly's Levergun Forum and is usually quick to answer any questions about 1892 rifles/carbines.

Picture of them (20" Short Rifle and 16" Carbine). I have since added a sling to the carbine.

IIRC Steves Gunz makes a peep sight that replaces the safety. That takes care of two (safety and horrible factory rear sight) problems with the rossi m92's. I traded my .44 mag 20 rossi to a shooting buddy and kick myself every time I go to the range with him! I'm keeping my eyes open for a reasonably priced 16" .357 to add to my collection.

They will occasionally pop up on Bud's Gunshop for around $400 but you have to be quick because they sell fast. And last I looked on Gun Broker there were a few.
