Can't afford the tolls to get out of Chicago
O.K. I searched for the 922r compliance deal and now I am totaly confused. I am getting an arsenal Inc. Import. So if it's imported, is it already compliant? If not what needs to be changed (as in my options on parts)? If things need to be changed, are there better parts that should be changed (as in fire control before stock change)? Can I put a folder on it, pull off the brake, and replace them with evil black rifle features? Any help is appretiated and thanks for any replies.

If it has a pistol grip right now (new arsenal production) you may add evil features to it (lug, threaded barrel) as the company already added the american parts. The stock set may be US made, so you may not be able to replace it w/ an imported one, however.

If the gun is in thumbhole stock config, it probably has no US made parts and you would have to add 4 or 5 to convert to PG form, add threaded barrel, etc.

From the picture on their site, and I am not getting it directly from the company, it has a thumbhole stock. It is the model that takes single stack mags which I will mill out when I get it. So, do I need to add parts? If so how many? Where do I get quality parts, I've checked Brownells and all they have are mach fire controll parts (but that counts as three parts). Sorry for all this, this is the first AK-47 I've ever owned and the first imported rifle I've ever owned outside bolt actions. If there is anything anyone wants to add that I should know, please feel free to add. THX.

single stack is the key. if it is single stack it is not designed for a "large capacity military magazine" and is exempt. what parts they have, i do not know.

if you don't know how to handle this issue, buy a double stack gun and save the worry. making a single compliant costs more at retail than the difference in price.

The general rule is you must have 10 or fewer imported parts. The types of parts that count for this is listed in a CFR somewhere but I am too lazy to go look for it right now, sorry. :)

As imported, however, it would be compliant and you wouldn't have to worry. If it was a C&R you'd have more issues but since it's not I won't go into that.

Here's how it works. The rifle "as-is" is 922(r) compliant. That means that in its current configuration, ATF has deemed it to be a sporting firearm and authorized its importation.

Now, you come along and want to start changing features on your rifle. You want a folding stock. ATF says that your rifle with a folding stock is not legal for importation because it is not a sporting firearm. 922(r) says that you cannot assemble a firearm that would be illegal for importation.

So basically, you can either leave your rifle configured as it was imported or you can play a little game ATF came up with that reclassifies your firearm from "imported" to "Made in USA."

To do this, ATF has made a list of parts that they consider major components of a firearm. You take the list and determine how many of the listed parts your rifle contains. It might be 13 or 16 or 19. Whatever.

ATF then says that if your rifle doesn't contain 10 or more "imported" parts, it is not considered an imported firearm. If you figured out your rifle had say 16 parts on the list, you replace any 7 parts on the rifle with US manufactured parts and your rifle is now "Made in America".

You can now make any modifications to your rifle you desire that are legal for any other US made rifle.

The parts list is:

(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings
or stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions
(4) Mounting blocks (trunnions)
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates

This is another example of gun laws that don’t make any sense. What kind of drugs are the people that make these laws on?

So in other words, an AK can be legal or not depending on what magazine you have in it at the time. I am sorry, but this is really stupid. Jim.

Can I ask a tangent question about 922?

I suppose I will:

I have a Norinco MAK90 AK which I got in the mid-90s. What all must I add to it in order to put a pistol grip on (in place of the thumbhole stock), and where do I get said parts? Thanks.
