9mm 115gr xtp loads w/hp38/w231 or WSF

I have 100 Hornady 115gr XTP-HP bullets that I got free w/Hornady die set.
I also have W231/HP38 and WSF.

What I don't have is any load info for this combination.

I understand Hornady recommends 1.075" OAL. (As opposed to all the 1.169" info floating around, heck that won't even chamber).


Any suggestions?

Both have 115 XTP data.

Hodgdon's has no XTP data, but plenty of 115 jacketed data you can use with them.

Jhall: Are you aware that HP38 and 231 are bassically the same powder and yo're wasting your money if you're buying both types. Next time just buy the cheaper one.

My match load for NRA PPC with my 5" S&W PPC-9 is with the Hornady 115gr XTP over 5.0gr of HP38/Win231 or 5.3gr of WSF. I use Precision Delta headstamped brass (Starline) and Winchester primers to replicate the factory load. Either of these will give 1,170fps from a 4" bbl, 1,200fps from a 5" bbl.


The 1990's Precision Delta factory ammo used a Remington 115jph at same charge and OAL, and is also very accurate, but not as reliably so as the XTP's. Precision Delta no longer uses HP38, but an IMI non-cannister powder that is MUCH cleaner burning, but no where near as accurate.

However, I seat the bullet to 1.125" oal. Accuracy is noticibly improved (1/2-1.0" tighter at 50yds from a pistol capable of near 2moa)

I traded some time back for 600rds of 115XTP's so I'm good to go. For a couple of years, at least. (I practice with Rainiers or Remingtons.......).

You can substitute the Nosler 115 JHP or the Sierra 115JHP, but the Sierra has to be seated to 1.070" oal. due to a different profile.

I used to get the cheaper powder, now it's come to buying whatever they have in stock, which is zippo lately. Fortunately I got smart and bought the last 4lb jug of W231. I only asked for loads with either cause I know some people reply only for one or the other.

I thought the 1.075 sounded a bit short. I'll try your suggested length. Smaller groups are better!

I'm leary of using any old info for XTP, as the XTP has a quirky "ogive". It's basically a straight line, not rounded as in other bullets. That difference may cause totally different pressures due to seating length.

The 115 XTP's shoot great for me with 5.3 grains WSF at anything from 1.08 to 1.10 & a .377 crimp.

Here's another vote for 5.3 gr Winchester Super Field under a 115gr FMJ bullet. I use this recipe with 115gr Montana Gold FMJ bullets and average around 1,130 fps with a CZ 85. IIRC, the XTP is a brass-jacketed hollow point that has a longer bearing surface than the standard FMJ bullet. You might need another .1 or .2 gr. of WSF to reach that velocity in your gun.

I load my 115 Montana Gold fmj at oal of 1.123 Chorno from 4.4 to 5.1 grs. win231 and found for my S&W MP9 with the 4.25 Barrel the 4.7 load works, meets IDPA Min, and no fte or ftf, Chorno avg for the 4.7 was 1095 fps with a power factor of 125.963, Min for idpa is 125.000. hope this helps

Here here! You are right about that. I tied a Walther up by just loading an XTP into a dummy round at about 1.14-1.15". Luckily, it WAS a dummy round. I seat them at different lengths whether intended for my Glocks or for my Kel-Tec.

However, I don't recall what my loads are set at in OAL at the moment. Have to check later.

As for your powders, I'd pick WSF if you have it. I've used a few pounds of it in 9mm in my Glocks and was very satisfied. It was very accurate and clean burning, cleaner than 231 IMO. I only stopped using it because I couldn't find it anymore (which was a couple of years ago, well before our current problem).

Another excellent high-performance 9mm powder, if you can find it, is Alliant Power Pistol. It easily gives over 1200-fps from my 4.5" Glock 17 with 115gr XTPs, and IIRC over 1100 from my PF-9.

That said, most of my 9mm loads use 231 with 115gr Win FMJs. I'm using 5.0-gr and getting right around 1180-fps. These are loaded to 1.15" OAL.
