The 9mm is my favorite handgun cartridge by far. The beauty of a 9mm derringer is that the 9mm round retains more of it's energy in a short barrel vs. its main competitor the .357, with less recoil, muzzle blast and most importantly noise. This gun IS loud though.
Well, I took it out tonight. This is a fun piece! The recoil is heavy as expected (I was shooting 9mm NATO), but works great. It makes a good dent in the center of the primer just like a quality weapon should. The accuracy was certainly nothing spectacular, but that's not the point. I believe hitting a man sized target at 15 yards is doable, which is all you can really ask from a derringer. I'm sure the small grips hold up the accuracy more than anything else.
My father shot it a couple of times. That was enough for him! He has large hands at the triggerguard rapped him in the middle finger twice pretty good. I do not recommend any of these higher caliber derringers for people who have large hands as you will only be able to get one finger around the grip. I can fit almost two. I'm somewhat big boned, but I have medium sized hands.
One worry I had was that the shells would be difficult to extract. All derringers that I know of that fire auto-cartridges lack a remington type extractor (for obvious reasons). However I was PLEASANTLY surprised to find out that it is only difficult to get unfired cartridges out. After you shoot them they practically fall out of the chamber.
All in all, I'm impressed with this neat little hand cannon. I would not want to use this as a primary CCW though if I could get away with something larger. The only place I see myself using this as a primary CCW is in someplace like work where I don't want to have to carry anything larger. This is a very durable weapon and I would not worry one second about whether it would break in my pocket.
In short I think this makes a great primary carry weapon for places like work and a great backup weapon for out and about. A real nice backup weapon for a Browning Hi-Power/Kahr MK9 ect.
I give this new derringer of mine a big thumbs up, especially for the $200 shipped I payed. Great deal IMO! It had obviously been laying under someone's bed for quite awhile as the box was full of cat hair. If you find an unfired one like mine near this price, I suggest you snap it up as the auto-cartridge derringers 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP are somewhat rare.
