9mm ballistics out of a carbine?

I'm not sure whether you are asking about velocities or bullet performance.

In my limited chrongraph testing with a 3.0" 9mm PM9 vs a 14.5" 9mm AR I didn't find a lot of velocity gain.

Speer 124gr +P Gold Dots= 1093 fps vs 1374 fps.
Win USA 115gr JHP= 989 fps vs 1212 fps
Win USA 147gr JHP= 863 fps vs 1002 fps
Fed PD 135gr JHP= 926 fps vs 1133 fps

Bullet performance would definitely depend on optimum designed expansion velocity range for the particular bullet. In some of the tougher designed bullets you would get the same expansion but greater penetration. In some of the lighter designed bullets with soft alloys/thin jackets you would get more violent fragmentation from the higher velocities.

As for actual testing of different bullets, I don't know of a site. I'm looking into how much of a pain it would be to do my own ballistic jelatin testing since I own a chronograph.

Hrm... those 147 Gr Rangers might be pretty nice out of a carbine.

Being a long time fan of the 9mm cartridge, I'd sort of embarassed to ask, but is there any such thing as a +P 147 Gr load or is there not enough capacity to make a difference?

Guess I'll go look at 444's link now. :uhoh:

I have chronographed 9mm loads with 3 and 4" pistols as well as the 16" Marlin Camp Carbine, and I was not pleased with the results.

The S&B 115 grain FMJ load was in FPS;
3"--1068
4"--1175
16"-1283

I attained the same results for the most part with my reloads that I worked up with AA#2 Imp. powder and 115 grain hornady fmj bullets loaded in S&B cases with WSP primers. I worked this load up to duplicate the 115 grain S&B load that shot& functioned well in all my "nines"

I think one could handload to a better velocity in the Carbine length barrel as the ammo available today is probably made to be efficient in pistol length barrels. The question would be, are the receivers in the Carbines built to withstand higher pressures or built just strong enough to handle the commericial ammo available?
