9mm BBQ Gun?

Having engraved a couple of BBQ guns, I would say that the term usually refers to a heavily engraved gun, which is meant to out do al the other engraved guns at that particular social event. So far, I have only done revolvers, and two derringers, all for the same client. The first was a restoration of an old Colt SAA, the others were copies of the same gun. The derringers were derived from the same design.

A BHP would pretty up real nice, but the engraving would likely run more than a grand itself.

A Glock would be tough to engrave, what with the polymer frame. I think the slide coating is pretty hard too!

I'm supposed to have an opportunity to cut a nice 1911 soon. We'll see how it comes out.

Take care,

Tom

bbq gun is a show off gun.... lets start with that to avoid confusion.. it isnt a gun that is meant to be carried for any practical purpose other than to show it off.... IE... engraving, inlays, and highly polished.... ETC..
I think the more commonly accepted term for a show off gun is "A SAFE QUEEN", which is a gun that seldom leaves the safe, only making appearances to try and impress friends who are impressed by "purdy guns".

"BBQ gun"???
This just makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Did you just coin the phrase or did you hear it somewhere?

I believe the term originated in Texas but it's been around a good long while. Try Googling it and you'll be surprised by what you find.

This would be prefect.

glock 23. with 9mm lone wolf conversion barrel.best of both worlds. reliability and pretty!!!

Wait.... c'mon.... really?
That may the first time that I've ever heard anyone accuse a Glock of being pretty.

Millertyme- I'm not a fan of engraved guns, but that may be one of the most beautifully done guns I've ever seen.

Millertyme that is classic.

Sharpeddressedmans Colt is real nice:cool: but that highpower is SWEET.
Mine is less most of the blue and is a fine gun. But I do think I am in love with the browning.

i remember this term from back in the 70s and i do believe it originated in Texas. the idea was to strap on your fancy hand-tooled holster and belt and slip in your latest "blinged out" handgun to show off when you went to a BBQ at your friends ranch.

if not from Texas, it is certainly from the South West

a Safe Queen is a gun you keep in your home and bring out to show the "guys" after dinner. it would trace it's American roots to monied households where the gentlemen would retire to the study for brandy and cigars and handle their Purdys or Holland & Hollands

anyone who would even suggest a utility pistol as a BBQ gun, just doesn't understand the concept

Blued HP with wood grips is about as pretty as a 9mm can get for me. I like engravings on some rifles or shotguns but they dont do it for me on pistols.

What a co-in-kee-dink...:D

Here ya go. 1 left in 9mm, but ya only have 3 days left.

FWIW, if I wanted a gun for BBQ it would be an early M29 .44 Mag w/8 3/4" barrel in nickel finish with Target stocks in some kind of fancy wood.

Edit: hehe... I see cskny has beaten me to it. Well played, sir! :D

Oh, come on. Men have embellished or decorated their personal weapons for thousands of years.

I was gonna make some remark till I remembered that just a couple days ago I was looking at a 96FS & already making plans for a set of checkered wood grips for it. I guess it's all a matter of degree...

There are two philosphies regarding the wearing of ornate guns. The first is the practical. Most guys that would even shell out the money for a decked out gun would tend to want to baby it, to protect their investment. Even a nice Browning "Renaissance" Hi Power (like the beauty shown above) would lose a little value if the silver plating got rubbed by a holster. Hence, most high end, engraved, or otherwise decked out pistols would be safe queens. On the other end, there are a few who own them, and feel that to use, carry, shoot, or put some wear on them is just part of treating themselves to the best. I think it funny that trap shooters will buy and use a Perazzi costing over $3000, but laugh at someone with a $3K engraved pistol on their hip. Same with the tac rifle crowd. Plain black rifles can go $2.5K and up, and you'd better believe that some of them are going to get shot, and some even drug through tough combat courses, or fielded in harsh places. There goes the nice black finish! I do not want to go through this life leaving my guns unfired, uncarried, in a vault, for my descendents to sell at a garage sales. My Colt Government started life as a plain ol' used gun from a gunshow, got a set of Bomars, trigger job, and tightened up barrel from Accurate Plating & Weaponry. I had them add a match hammer, trigger, etc, and leave the finishing to my engraver, who hammered on it for quite a few hours, and even surprised me with a gold inlay. All in all, my Colt came in way under a Perazzi, or a high end AR. The pistol shoots well, and has a trigger under 3 lbs. It was MADE to be shot, so why not carry it too? I do not wait for BBQ's; they are too few and far in between. If you want to see a LOT of BBQ type guns that got carried, and carried a lot, try the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco, TX. Those boys were proud to carry their guns; you can see the bluing wear or the finely scratched nickel or gold plate. You only live once.

Never heard of a BBQ gun before, but at least now I know what the term means. Very nice pics so far..those guns are beautiful!

I can think of a few.

Sig p226 line up

And I love the BHP idea too

lions has the BBQ gun concept firmly in hand

I likey.

BBQ have to be atrociously gaudy. Nickel, gold, pearl please. There are exceptions to this rule but I like nickel and pearl to be sure. Need to get a BBQ gun.

Court Guns and BBQ Guns

^Required reading about BBQ guns and Court Guns which are similar in idea but different in form.

... being german, i´d bring a Luger .. and spend the afternoon explaining
how soooo not nazi i am :)

a nice Blackpowder Colt ...

a S&W Topbreak revolver ...

a broomhandle Mauser ...

a chromed Mp7 ...

of course u could always outdo
everyone by bringing a Mosin,
and offering Shishkebabs off your bayonet :)

I completely understand it. It's a show piece, something with "Oooo" factor. You know, you look at it and go "Oooo". I think it would be pretty cool to have a show piece. It's kinda like having one good suit, or an expensive pair of boots.

I'm working on one now. It's an MAB model D. It will have Niter blued non essentials, the frame and slide will be charcoal blued. The custom barrel is over length and threaded for an AAC suppressor. The suppressor will be sand blasted, polished, then acid etched with a vine pattern then satin clear coated.

Just something to do.
