I'm not talking about hog hunting. I'm talking about killing farm raised hogs before you butcher them. Around here people like to use a .22lr rifle and shoot the hog between the eyes, but every once in a while I hear about a hog that doesn't drop dead. If you get the the hog to where you want him, shoot him, and then he runs off a little peice, you've gonna have a time moving him again.

Would a 115 grain fmj 9mm pistol round be too much? I imagine that given the close range and a 5 inch barrel it would have no problems going through the skull and brain, but would it over-penetrate too much and be a ricochet hazzard? Would bone splinters be a protental hazzard?

We don't raise hogs and I've never been to a hog killin, but I plan on going to one. I get the job of dispatching the hog and don't know whether to use a .22lr rifle or go with the 9mm. I really don't want to get stuck having to move the beast if he runs.

A second thought is that the stories I hear about the hogs running might be from people using cheap/weak .22lr rounds. Any suggestions for rounds? No hollow points I assume.

Thanks,

I've used a 9mm with 115JHPs on pigs, goats, and calves , no problem at all.Try not to get the animal excited it will affect the meat especially pigs. The bullet in the right place [center of the forehead ]doesn't kill the animal, it only knocks it out . You then slit it's throat so the still beating heart will bleed out the animal. For pigs they usually thrust a knife into the chest to cut the blood vessels coming out the top of the heart. This is especially important with big animals.Have everything ready to shave the hair off [I have skinned a pig ! NOT recommended ]...My only surprize was with a calf [500 + lbs] who , as it should have, instantly dropped .I holstered the gun, drew my knife and stepped forward to slit it's throat. It suddenly jumped up and ran at me . Fortunately it was still chained ! The owner just laughed and laughed as I recovered from my surprize !!

Hi, I slaughter quite a bit in the last 30 years. A .38spl works Ok. A .22 mag is marginal unless injected behind the ear on proper angle.. A .30 carbine is about perfect , a 9mm or .45acp is good. Talking about drop like a sack ! I too cut neck arteries while hearts beating . Trick here is to stick knife blade down in straight thru neck just under the spine and lever handle away in a downward arc cutting thru everything till knife comes out. This drops them instantly if you don't shoot them first! Don't saw the knife upward and across Zarquiwhi style. Pigs do require the "sticking" of the blade just right and wiggle to sever heart arteries , a double edge knife works good for this.. This is real bloody work! I have a special Mad Dog knife just for this work. It is his 9" Rezine 2000 viewed here:
