I'm not talking about hog hunting. I'm talking about killing farm raised hogs before you butcher them. Around here people like to use a .22lr rifle and shoot the hog between the eyes, but every once in a while I hear about a hog that doesn't drop dead. If you get the the hog to where you want him, shoot him, and then he runs off a little peice, you've gonna have a time moving him again.
Would a 115 grain fmj 9mm pistol round be too much? I imagine that given the close range and a 5 inch barrel it would have no problems going through the skull and brain, but would it over-penetrate too much and be a ricochet hazzard? Would bone splinters be a protental hazzard?
We don't raise hogs and I've never been to a hog killin, but I plan on going to one. I get the job of dispatching the hog and don't know whether to use a .22lr rifle or go with the 9mm. I really don't want to get stuck having to move the beast if he runs.
A second thought is that the stories I hear about the hogs running might be from people using cheap/weak .22lr rounds. Any suggestions for rounds? No hollow points I assume.
Thanks,
mole
