9mm handgun or 22 rifle?

I dunno, I voted for the .22 but I guess if I was thinking about what it is can I shoot -right now- ammo availability would weigh heavily in my decision. Maybe consider a wider window of selection based on that.
I'd be open to other options, those 2 are just the ones that seemed to get the most suggestions from my "real life" friends who are gun owners.

I'm not concerned about the shortage of 22lr for two reasons, mainly that I think it will end eventually and even at gouger prices its still cheaper than just about any other ammo. I can get by with just my shotgun obviously as the ammo is plentiful for it (although I can't seem to find reduced recoil buck locally) and probably always will be. The big downfall is I'm SOL shooting during the winter because no indoor ranges around here allow shotguns, one of the bigger reasons I'd like another option in the safe. Think of it as buying my "toys" before we have a kid and I don't have any money for more "toys".

Two things I'd consider - If FIL and BIL have .22 rifles, then you could look at this either as 1>get the pistol you want, since you can probably shoot their rifles until you can save up to get your own, thereby increasing the variety of guns you can shoot, or 2>get your own .22 rifle, so the social/fitting in aspect is better when you are out at the farm shooting with them.

I think the handgun would add some versatility to what you are able to do, so I would go that route, and I would probably get a used quality 9mm or .38 Special. Just the way I would be thinking.

Are you sure it wasn't a Stevens or a 64?

It might have been a 64 that I saw. I'm pretty sure it said "Savage" on it. I remember thinking it was a great deal and then seeing that it didn't have the Accu-Trigger.

There is definitely a non-Accutrigger Mark II, check out Bud's. They have one for sale pretty cheap compared to the other Mark II's. I assumed it had an Accutrigger until I read more closely.

I vote for the .22. ANYBODY can shoot it accurately, and it makes an awesome survival rifle. Small game doesn't stand a chance!
