9mm or .40?

I already have a 45 ( hk usp 45f ), but thats for home defense and its to big to conceal, at least for me it is.

If you can handle the .40, it's not a bad way to go! Good luck on the purchase.

.45 in a subcompact is kind of defeating the purpose :D. .40 is pushing it too though.

FWIW, I own the XD-40 SC and love it. I honestly believe I shoot it more accurately than all my other handguns, excluding maybe my full-size 1911. Maybe it's just because it fits my hand just right, maybe it's because I've owned it for longer than most of my other handguns and have therefor shot it more, maybe .40 is just my caliber, I don't know. But if I were to pick up 1 handgun to make 1 hole in 1 target quickly and accurately, I'd choose my XD-40 SC. You wouldn't be disappointed with either, though.

For what it's worth I say go with the 9mm. I carried one for years the in the late 80's our sheriff got beretta's for the narc's and detectives. Around 99 a new sheriff wanted to go with all department issues weapons. I was put on a team to test several weapons I was the only one that wanted to stay with the 9mm seems everyone eles wanted the .40. Sheriff went with the .357 sig. scores went way down then later further down as the budget didn't allow us to shoot as much and most LEO's won't spend thier own momey on ammo. In the last 28 years we only have had 4 officer involved shootings and the 9's did the same job as the .357. You can shoot a lot more with the 9mm due to price and buy good ammo for carry that way you end up with the best of both world a good stopping power and good shot placement since you been abel to shoot more.

Be safe

Modern advice says 'For defense, carry the largest caliber that you can shoot well.'

In more recent times, I'd also add to that "and afford to shoot."

One o' my main CCW is an XDSC40, and it's surprising how accurate it is.
I've never shot the same gun in a 9mm, but I've told folks considering one if I had it to do over again, I might go with the 9mm. I've had a tendency to move down the caliber scale as SD ammo has gotten better.

My XD40SC does have a bit more muzzle flip than I'd like, but don't know how it would compare to the same gun in a 9mm. 40 recoil doesn't bother me-would just like less muzzle flip.

One good thing about the .40 is that it takes all the guesswork out of bullet selection - Gold Dot 165 gr.
The only reason to get a 9mm is if a specific gun that you like a lot only comes exactly the way you want it in a 9mm, IMHO.

Add another 9mm vote here. It's probably my favorite autopistol round in general. I use mine frequently as a woods gun as well, being less concerned about the bears and meese and more with the smaller critters and 4x4 crowd.

The 9mm has plenty of power, is easy to shoot well with, is cheaper to shoot and holds more bullets. What's not to like? Honestly, if I (Heaven forbid ever) HAVE to shoot something with a pistol, it's going to get shot more than once. More like 3, 4, 5 times. At that point, I'll take the gun with more rounds left over in case of unforeseen emergencies.

But if you doubt the ability of the 9mm to do the job, get the .40. Better to have confidence in your gear than to have a nagging doubt in the back of your head. (I'm getting a G-26 to supplant a Kel-Tec in a few weeks just because of that "nagging doubt", sooo... )

Either way, you'll be well served.
