9mm, .40, or .45?

Then you get into mag capacity...I like my nine because I get 17+1 that's a lot of forgiveness compared to a .45 in 7 or 8+1.

Vs. a 1911, yeah. A Glock 21SF can hold 13 round mags, and 1 in the chamber = 14 rounds altogether. Not too bad, for .45 ACP capacity, I'd say.

9mm is easier to shoot than .45 or .40 but you do loose some stopping power. On the flip side you get more chances to hit a vital. Shot placement is key but not everyone can put the shot in the right place when they are new to handguns so I would rather carry a larger caliber to gain the energy of the round as well as some stopping power. My preferance is .40, It is a nice combo of round capacity and stopping power, however they are a little more snappy than .45 and 9mm. With the right ammo any caliber will work if you practice.

Well, from an economic standpoint, I just bought some ammo from Ammunition to Go. I got 500 rounds of Federal +P+ 115 gr. JHPs for $141. I also got 250 rounds of .45ACP +P 185 gr. JHP for $144. Both of these rounds have more than adequate stopping power, but one caliber was more than twice the amount of the other. Plus, if you ever have to haul ammo in, say, a bug-out or emergency bag, you'll be able to carry a lot more 9mm rounds than either the .40 or .45ACP.

Finally, seeing that you can carry up to 20 9mm rounds in a pistol vice 8-13 in a .45, I just think it makes more sense to go with 9mm. I do like the steel frame pistols, though. The Smith 5906 is great if you can find one.

I do agree with that point on the cost and round capacity, that is why I went with the .40.... I couln't make up my mind between 9mm and .45

My choices in the calibers listed I will limit to what I own.

S&W 1911 5" Bbl. .45 ACP
S&W 625 5" Bbl. .45 ACP & .45 Auto RIm

I also have a spare barrel in .400 CorBon which for the O.P. newbie is
a necked down .45 ACP to .40 cal. It fires the same weight bullet as
a .40 S&W at about 250+ FPS

However, with the cost of ammo and range excursions, I shopped for a
9MM x 19 in order to cut cost. I chose a CZ 75B in 9MM. Parabellum/Luger
It is 16 rds mag + 1, DA first shot, and has the SA for subsequent shots as
well as the thumb safety on, COnd. One Cocked and Locked carry option.
I am much impressed with it's reliability 100% so far, and accuracy It also
has a Kadet .22 LR conversion kit consisting of a barrel, slide, spring and
magazine for even more economical practice with the same trigger and
other controls.

WHen I bought my 625 revolver a few years ago and got back into firearms and shooting I bought a S&W 617 6" Bbl. .22 LR for practice
DA shooting so they both go to the range together - warm up with the
.22 and then boom away with the .45 Revolver

I'm currently evaluating various platforms that are chambered
in .40 S&W leaning toward a SIg P229 FWIW
