Until the premium bullets came along, the Federal +P+ load was the gold standard in law enforcement and was adopted by a number of departments with good results.
In my S&W M28 I get about 1450 fps with a 160 grain cast bullet with published loads. Even getting close to that with a 115 grain 9mm bullet is much too risky for my taste. A good 115 grain HP at 1150 to 1200 fps satisfies my needs. Even the Remington 158jhp factory load gets 1280 fps in that revolver. For the kind of velocities in a 9mm that you describe I prefer my 1911 .38sup. I really don't care to stress my Hi Power.
