9mm range gun

Sig certified pre-owned P229? They're something like $600? Probably would be your best bet.

Glock 17 is also a good choice. Accurate, lots to play with in the trigger department, and right around $530 for a Gen 3. A little more for the Gen 4. Still under $600.

1911's would be a good choice as well. A used Sig or a Springfield would be my choice there.

OP, you clearly want a CZ... Even the plain-jane 75B is capable of making you look like a rockstar at the range, and it's ergos are still unsurpassed.

+1 on a cz or cz pattern gun. I like the 75 SA and, now that they finally fixed the magazine issue, the witness elite match.

UPDATE:

After looking around and pretty focused on the SIG 229, I found an excellent deal on a lightly used SIG P228, 1996, German made. Triple serial numbers.

VERY happy. Great shooter. I had the slide Cerakoted by a local guy. Looks fantastic. And then got Hogue G-10 grips.

LOVE this gun.

Do not have a pic of after...but the above is how I got the gun....and you can see it is in excellent condition.

And...now....I am actually thinking about a S&W M&P Pro, as another 9mm range gun. Just to have something a little different than the SIG, so I can change things up.

Thanks

John

If you now considering polymer, look at the Ruger SR9. Latest version has an excellent trigger for a striker fired gun, thumb safety, adjustable rear sight, adjustable grip backstrap, very accurate and very reliable. Weighs 27 ounces empty, holds 17 rounds, and soft recoil.

I have actually had a couple polymer guns. Not a real fan, but know that they can be very fine arms.

Have had a Glock 19, Glock 26 (liked it) and the SR9c. At the time, I was mostly looking for a good CC...but solved that problem with a Kimber Ultra in .45acp...very happy there.

So now...since I have the Kimber for carry, the SIG for high cap HD and to have a classic I have always wanted....I am more focused on a full sized range toy. Since I have already spent money on the new SIG, it would have to be something very reasonably priced, but still worthwhile. Must be accuate. And something different from what I already have. So...a polymer gun fits that criteria. Would consider a SIG 2022...but that would be muh like what I already have in a SIG (though...you really can never have too many SIGs).

What I will do is to use it as a platform for trying various items. Mini red dot. Sure fire light (for HD at night). Who knows what else. SO...need a rail. Have heard many good things about M&P's, after the first batch, and since I have already owned a Glock and SR9, am looking for something different. Most important is that there is an after market trigger...since I am very used to good, crisp 1911 triggers.

SO...we shall see. I really should not spend the money....and I am very happy with what i have...but....you know how that goes....

I'm a fan of quality range guns. I've had many but my staple range guns are:

Sig P226
BHP
Witness elite match
CZ SP01

All are very accurate and I like really like them. I enjoy shooting the Witness Elite Match the most and it EASILY has the best trigger. The only mod I made was putting on a fiber optic front sight.

Best Regards,
Jerry

What about a 1911 in 9mm?

I was at the range 2 weeks ago, when an acquaintance showed up with a Taurus 1911 in 9mm.
I laughed when he let me shoot it.
The recoil was nothing!

If I were looking for a "Range Gun" that would be my choice.
(not necessarily a Taurus, but I would seriously look at 1911s)

Outstanding. It doesn't get any better than a P228!!

Hi guys

Thanks for the great replies. I have an update for you.

Went to a range where I was able to rent a few polymer 9s. Got the chance to shoot a Beretta PX storm, glock 19 and MP9c along side my sig 228. It was a very good session and very helpful.

And...well... You can imagine the results. Wow....what a let down everything else was. NOT to put down these arms, they are very fine arms for what they do. I thought the beretta handled well and was very smooth to shoot. The glock was nice and pretty accurate. The trigger on the MP9c seemed to have a comfortable feel to it and the grip felt very good in my hands. Liked the balance.

But...nothing shot as well, as consistently and as accurate as the SIG. And this is not because I am a sig fanboy. I have owned glocks, the Ruger sr9c, RIA 45s and others. I have had a couple sigs and always seem to come back to them.

So....now....not thinking of getting another gun. Might get the sig short reset trigger for the 228.

But the suggestions above are very helpful. If I were to think about a dedicated range gun that would be accurate and feel the way I want a gun to without being too expensive....the Taurus 1911 9mm might be good to look at. Not a bad idea. Would also think about another used sig. The 225 would be nice to have, a 226 might be good.

So...a quick update for your appreciate all comments.

Best

J

My CZ-75D PCR gets carried and taken to the range. My Sig P228 sits in the safe. Its ashame you didn't try some others. Nothing wrong with Sigs though.

A Sig Sauer P226 X5 is very hard to beat

SigP226X5Stainless2-1.jpg

Unbelievably accurate out of the box. :what:

Smooth even trigger - crisp break.

What an incredible pistol that is Don!

That might be my next purchase though X-FIVE P226 are getting hard to find around here.

Hi guys

The range I was at had a limited selection. It is the only range I know of here tha has rentals at all.

Search is not over, just suspended for a bit. CZ's will be on the long list.

It is an evolution...never the end. I do appreciate all the good advice.

One thing.... I want to have a mini red dot on all my range guns from now on. Using reading glasses is getting old and even a 1.0 diopter makes a 25rd target unreadable. So..tried a mini red dot on the SIG and like it. GOing to go to that. SO...that means that whatever gun it is, I need to be able to find a burris fastfire adapter plate for it.

Thanks

J

I saw that you wanted someone with an FN-p9 to chime in I have one and I love it. Great shooter very light and easy recoil all for $400 nib. It is accurate and a fun pistol to shoot it comes with 3 16 round stainless mags . I dont think that I would get one instead of a 229/226 but for $400 its tough to beat also no ftf's of any kind with any ammo ive put through it after 500 rounds. I thought I heard somewhere it has the nickname of the poor mans sig. Just saying.

If you can get a dealer to give you a price break, the Witness Elite should be on your list. All steel gun, good grip and ergonomics, excellent accuracy, and long sight radius. The provision for mounting a optic sight is another plus, as well as the numerous add-on options from EAA and Herrington.
