Are there any 9mm revolvers out there (that's relatively easy to find)?
I noticed that ruger used to make sp101 in 9mm and wish they still did :(
Is it possible to convert a sp101 38/357 to 9mm?
Thanks

I think Ruger still makes a 9mm (and .38 spcl) revolver (last catalog I got had one in it, but that's been a year or two...haven't got this year's yet) I think the reason there aren't many is that 9mm is a "rimless" cartridge, making it hard to make it stay in a cylinder without moving around. They have to sell plastic half-moon clips to clip the cartridges to make them stay put.

The only revolver in 9mm is a Ruger Blackhawk convertable. I wish that S&W and Ruger would make their DA revolvers in 9mm with moonclips. I had a S&W 940 and it was a great gun just heavy for carry. I sold it and with the money I got for it I purchased a 642 and a 940 cylinder for it. The cylinder also fits into my S&W 60-4 it makes for a great gun.

I would love to have K scandium frame round butt with fixed sights in 9mm that used moonclips

940 cylinder swaps take a lot of checking, I will not explain it unless you do a good search here, at TheFiringline and at S&W Forums.

The cylinder must be fitted by a good smith and you cannot fire full house loads in an aluminum framed very much.

Brian,
Am i to understand from your post that i could buy a 940 cylinder for my 642 and fire 9mm out of it with moonclips/star clips? Are there any other modifications needed other than loosening the holddown screw, removing the cylinder and swapping the new one in & tightening the screw? If it is easy to swap these out -- where do you find 940 cylinders? Does s&w sell them directly?

trainwreck, I would definitely have to find out about it.. but I thought I read somewhere that they discontinued the model.

905SS2 was the 5 shot 9mm snub nose from Taurus that has been discontinued as far as anyone can tell.

So you are looking at the:
Ruger Convertible
Nosorog semi automatic revolver in 9mm or in 357
and their is suposed to be a japanese 9mm semi auto revolver similar to the nosorog.

Good luck on your quest.

my thread on the taurus 905IB was/is a 9mm revolver listed in gun annual 2007 msrp $625. but,as RTLs' link shows, taurus does not list this gun,or any 9mm revolver. just as their time should have came.

I have a Taurus 905 Stainless that I like very much. I also have a Glock 19, and an FN Hi Power. This keeps me with only one caliber ammo. The Taurus 905 has been discontinued by Taurus, but new or nearly new ones can still be found on Gunbroker.com. This is what I carry when I'm "not carrying". I can drop it in my jeans pocket, and it just sort of disappears.

fwiw, the 905IB pictured in Gun Annual, has a fully exposed hammer, and the bbl. is listed at 1.75".

S&W model 547. You gotta find them used though. Out of production. I want one

Brian,

I'd also like to know more about swapping a 940 cylinder into a 640 or model 60--is it a straight swap?

I was thinking about a Ruger Convertible, the allure of cheap (and plentiful, at my house) 9mm ammo is high. Howerver, thread research here at THR dug up that some folks feel the 9mm convertibles aren't very accurate, due to the slightly smaller 9mm bullet. Anyone care to comment? I assume this would be true for a swapped cylinder S&W, too.

It still intrigues me. I like shooting my 22 in 45ACP; common ammo with my 45 pistols is very convenient (and the gun is great to shoot!!)

The 9mm SP-101 was discontinued years ago and the value on used ones is going up and up. Mine has been a wonderful gun and I have no plans to part with it.

The Blackhawk convertibles have long been rumored to be innacurate with the 9mm cylinder but the one I have now and the one I used to have both proved plenty accurate and with ammo they liked were on par with the .357 cylinder which is phenomenal.

I know someone who is selling one of those SS Taurus 9mm revolvers to fund a M1A.

Anyone interested PM me for his E-mail...

Well, when I looked it up I realized it was the Blackhawk I was thinking of...could have sworn it was a Redhawk...I wonder if the Redhawk .38 spcl would accept a 9mm cylinder from the Blackhawk? Might be something to look into, don't know if Ruger could tell you or not, but someone on here or a good smith might be able to.

Trainwreck- First off, the Redhawk was never made in .38 and hasn't even been available in .357 for about 20 years, secondly the Redhawk and Blackhawk have nothing in common where cylinders come into play.

You're pretty much stuck with trying to find the actual gun if you're talking Ruger unless you could find an old SP-101 or Speed-Six 9mm cylinder to graft onto a .38 or .357 model. I've never seen a 9mm cylinder for sale for anything but a Blackhawk but anything is possible.

A Smith would be an easier project just simply because there are larger quantities available but will still command a premium.

Taurus is probably the easiest option to see if you even like the 9mm in a revolver (But why wouldn't you) before dropping significant cash on the Ruger or Smith. But there are deals out there and you may get lucky if you keep snooping around.

I'd love to get a S&W 547. It's basically a HB Model 10 but is chambered for 9mm. I think they're pretty hard to find though.

You can still fine SP101 9mm revolvers, too. I got mine from a THR member a few months ago.

I think my moonclips are metal, though.

They are nifty handguns. I've considered getting a Blackhawk convertible, too, just because I have so much 9mm around.

A Word Of Advice!

If anyone finds a nice S&W M547, do not post a picture or crow about your purchase! Why? The M547 has eluded me since I did not buy one from CDNN when they were closed out. Yes, the Model 547s then went for a song but alas, no more. Lastly, if you have never fired a M547 you have missed a treat. Regards, Richard:D

Correct GrimJaw- Ruger moon clips are steel. Still available through Ruger as well for the SP-101 but not the Speed-Six. They quit listing the ones for the Speed-Six at the first of the year. I stocked up for my SP-101 but missed out on the others. Guess I'll just have to hope mine comes with a bunch when I finally find it.

$$$$

I can buy 9mm for $6/50 all day long at local shops. Can't get .38Spl for less than $12/50 anywhere (except for Blazer Alum. for ~$10.50/50).
