I am currently reloading some Ranier/Berry (can't remember right now) and some cast 124 g truncated cone bullets for my Glock 15. I use W231 @ 4.2 grains. Question. Is it in anyone elses experience that the functional COL for the TC is significantly less (around 1.100 inches) vs the typical round nose load?

By functional I mean reliable feeding. Yes I factory crimp.

The standard FMJ RN I load to around 1.155-1.160. The OAL of a lead bullet depends on the shape of the bullet. I have seen bullets of he same weight load to different OAL because of shape.

TC bullets need a much shorter OAL, and therefore, smaller powder charge, unless you are using load data for that specific shape of lead bullet. Load up a dummy round to see what OAL will fit in the barrel, then seat it a hair or two shorter, just to be sure. Then work up from a reduced powder charge.

The reason the TC needs a shorter OAL is because there isn't much of the bullet poking past the base of the cone, therefore the "shoulder" of the bullet is farther forward, compared to a RN or spiral point style bullet, which can fit more of the bullet's weight/mass forward of the forcing cone (or whatever you call in in an autoloader). I had this exact same experience with 9mm 124gr TC bullets.

I have some of those bullets from Precision, and while I loaded a bunch at 1.118, I also did some at 1.10. A decent result resulted.

Desmo,

I now remember reading this about a month ago. Thanks for the reminder. RC Model was right. Seat the TC deeper than RN is the ticket and since I am loading on 4.2 g of W231 pressure shouldn't be an issue. I reset the depth on some Cast Lee 125 g TC and went out and shot 8 of them. (these had 3.8 g of W231.) They shot perfectly. No doubt on my Glock 17 1.09 to 1.10 is a good length. I took RC's advise and check every reload in my barrel (removed of course) to make sure they fell in to the proper headspace and then dropped back out. Problem solved.

PS. Don't give me fits about Glocks and cast. I have a Lone Wolf Barrel installed.
