I was skimming through the gunblast.com website and the guy said one of his freinds would prefer using a hatchet instead of a 9mm in very close quarters combat.

your thoughts?

I have acquaintances that say all sort of outrageous things. Sometimes they do it when they're sober, even...

Kind of depends on just how "close" that close quarters combat might be, doesn't it?

I'll take a 9mm over a hatchet any day.

a hatchet would be a good back up, to the back up.

Some people don't get it, but an agressive man with a knife at less than 10 yards is considered a threat and to just shoot, so at real close quarters a hatchet is a viable weapon.

My choice would depend upon whether I was preparing to chop wood for the camp fire or in need of defending myself...

"Very close quarters brings the risk of grappling. It's easier to block an arm swing than a trigger pull."

I'll stand by that statement as well

I've spoken to several folks, who were properly trained, who prefer a blade to a gun in "telephone booth" close fighting as they call it. That close in sometimes a blade makes sense, but I can't explain it as well as they could.

It depends on the distance. If it's truly face-to-face I might go with the axe, since with a head blow it stands a better chance of stopping the attack than a 9x19.

There's no law against being an idiot with access to the internet. Whoever it was on Gunblast that said they'd take a hatchet over a pistol was proof of this.

Is this a joke? If given the option of a having a gun or having a knive to save my life I would choose the gun.....obviously.

If an attacker is on top of you, you're not gonna be able to swing a hatchet worth beans. You might be able to get a good thrust or slash with a blade. Shouldn't be too tough at all to pull a trigger.

You also run a greater risk of cutting yourself in extreme CQB with a knife.

I would consider a hatchet a weapon of opportunity, not of choice. If someone is coming at me and the little axe is in my hand or in reach, I might go for it. If I have a choice, it'll be a firearm.

You know someone is going to mount an axe head on his tac-rails now.

I like hatchets axes and tomohawks... but they aren't guns.

I'd like to see that...I bet its a matter of time until we see baby sledge's strapped to shotguns too. :D

I always carry some kinda knife to back up what ever kinda of gun i got but it is almost last ditch.A hatchet is a lil better than a knife but I still wouldnt want to use it instead of my P95.

one shot one kill

actually...

if you have been through handgun training you may know how surprisingly fast a man with a knife/hatchet can close ground with you as you
stumble to pull your piece and get into the game...depending on the distance and place the hatchet may be your best choice.

Keep in mind, Gringolet, that unlike a knife, a hatchet requires very broad movements to be dangerous/useful. I can stab you without you seeing it coming. Swinging a hatchet at your head, however, I think you'll notice well in advance.
( Unless you're facing the other way, in which case, it doesn't matter... I might as well be driving a bus. )

You're postulating that the handgun is in a holster and the hatchet is in the hand. Two different things. How about both in the hand at 20 feet? Both in a holster at 20 feet?

I'll give you 6 feet, your hatchet in hand, and my HP in it's usual holster.

I'm quite willing to bet my life you'll lose. ;)

A knife, on the other hand... I'll pass.
Been there, done that, and it don't pay.

using a hatchet

perhaps if I were fighting a tree or a particularly aggressive bramble... Maybe an ent even. However, if it's a mamal, reptile, or fowl give me the 9mm (over the hatchet).~Nathan

Who walks around with a hatchet hanging from their hip or would even want to? Is it even legal? No matter because I would never even consider having a hatchet hanging from my hip unless I was out gathering firewood on a camping trip, a knife on the other hand is always wise to have in your possession.

I applied for my CCH (Concealed Carry Hatchet) the other day and am expecting to have it approved any time now.

Some of the questions on the application like: "Have you ever been convicted of an ax murder?" were a little tricky, but I think I did OK.

I'm trying to decide whether to carry it in a Milt Sparks Versa-Ax for IWB or search around for something a bit less spendy with a shorter delivery time.

Decisions....... :scrutiny:

At any rate, bye-bye 9mm. Hello Paul Bunyan Special!
