9x18 mak case length

Converting some 9x19 brass to 9x18. Is there a min case length ? I see the max is .708. I rimmed a few using the rcbs trimmer and I cut a few to .700
I adjust the length and now they are comming in at about .703/.704

The rule of thumb for trim too length is .010" off maximum, or .698" for that 9x18., so your .700" number would be just fine. And .703" would as well work just fine. I usually trim rimless brass to about middle of the road, that's just me though.

Too short!

Lyman #49 says:
Max case length is .713".
Trim length is .710".

Hornady #6 says:
Max case length is .713".
Trim length is .708".

Since the cartridge headspaces on the case mouth, and the extractor must snap over the rim during feeding in a MAK.
I would decide which book is right, and use that minimum length.

You may get misfires any shorter then that.

Starline's tolerance is .700" - .706" for new brass. I've measured PPU and the steel cased Brown bear and Wolf - the ones I measured were in the .704" - .708" range.

My new Starline were .702". I trimmed my 9X19 to that length figuring they probably knew more than I did.

I figure if .708" was to long I'd trim more but this length works in this pistol. Better to long than to short, sometimes you need to sneak up on things.

In that case just trim off 1mm and call it good. (I'm sorry, I just had to say that!)

Hornady 9th Edition has the same data as Hornady #6
Max Case Length - .713"
Case Trim Length - .708"

Check your gun. My PA-63 chamber is cut long. It will barely catch the rim on a chambered round. The slide has to be dropped hard, or it'll just hang on the side of the rim. This doesn't matter, so long as the round fires. But in case of a malfunction, I wouldn't want to have any short cases.

I use a Lee, so I can't go back and make the pilot longer, unfortunately. Well, I guess I could if I broke out the lock-tite. My cases come out right at 18mm. If your cases chamber (and extract, unfired) out of your gun, then there's no problem.
