A 1911 dilemma

1911s aren't exactly hard to find.

Live a little. Enjoy the HK for a while, then decide.

You can get a nice 1911 for the same $700.

That.

I have really tried to like the HK autos, I've even test-driven a few, and... like the Glock... they just aren't for me. I'd take a 1911 every day, and twice on Sunday. I guess it boils down to what you can get out of your Systema...

I like the 45 ACP cartridge but I just cannot bring myself to buy a semi-auto pistol chambered in 45 ACP other than a Model 1911.

I keep looking at an S&W M&P 45 but I just cannot pry my wallet open to buy one.:)

As far as the foreign, "licensed" built 1911's, I'm not sure. I do not have any experience with them. I might buy one if I ran across a good one. They might be a good addition to a 1911 collection.
I’m a 1911 guy got 5 of them. I recently got a S&W M&P and a shield in 45 acp. I really do like the S&W, both of them. They are the best plastic gun I’ve held or shot. There are quite a few floating around that are law enforcement trade ins. Most in that $400 range. I got lucky, mine is almost like new and was under $400. Not getting rid of my 1911s or Witness etc., etc., but have no regrets for buying the P&P.

My tuned 1911's are my favorite range guns... in my eyes there is no equal.

I don't feel comfortable using my low capacity hair trigger 1911's as a night stand gun though. For a full size self defense gun I prefer a double stack plastic fantastic like the HK. I prefer my Springfield double stacks over the HK even though my prejudices tend towards a hammer... if feasible. I do appreciate the decocker on the HK45. I really like having a decocker on a hammer fired SA/DA gun!

What role do you want your .45 to fulfill?

Wasn't the Sistema model 1927 manufactured in Argentina... not the USA?

That's true, the Sistema was made in Argentina, but on Colt equipment, to Colt spec. At the time, about 10 years ago, that was the only "real" 1911 I could afford. Most of the parts I've used were Colt parts that dropped right in...as much as any part drops into a 1911. Back then I had a buddy who had bought an HK45c in the heady days before the economy took a dump. I thought that was the cat's behind, though I was comparing that to the Bersa 45UC I had at the time. We'll see how it goes, I'll be picking up the HK today, and see how it stacks up to the Sistema before I make a decision on selling or not.

I recently took my brand new 1911 out to the range to shoot alongside my P365 and my M&P40. The 1911 was the most accurate and had the best trigger. But the P365 was a close second.

When doing reactive target drills, the 1911 was the best. But, it ran out of ammo well before the other pistols and was the heaviest. It was also the largest. Which is why I choose to carry a P365 and not a 1911. When the rubber meets the road and you need a handgun to save your life, what is most important? Nostalgia or numbers?

When choosing the handgun to save your life, you have chosen the gun that is easiest to carry and not the gun that is easiest to shoot the best. I understand the choice, and many make the same one, but not all will.

Well, I did it. Well paid for it anyway, NICS is so backed up, I need to swing by tomorrow to pick up the HK45, still have the 1911. I'll let you know how it shoots when I get to the range...and if I have a 1911 for sale:D
You went to the best choice: both.
But if forced to, I'd sold the 1911 and got the HK, no question.

Just traded off My HK45C. Very nice and modern, great shooting .45 ACP pistol. NOT a very nice 1911!

I too, though new to The High Road, am a 1911 nut. I'll take nearly any that speak to me and are reasonably reliable. I say 'reasonably', because, I can fix some problems myself in my old age, lol.

Here is a sampling of the diversity of my tastes. A Sig Sauer 1911 Extreme, A Citadel Phillipine 3.5" w/ compact grip size, and an RIA bbr-3.10 3.1" ultra size with a pinky extension I cobbled on as a magazine bottom plate so I could get all 3 extra fingers on it! It's a real little beast with a PORTED barrel, lol.

I love 1911's. I love the trigger, I love the nostalgia. Or maybe I love the idea of 1911's. Kinda like I love the idea of '64 Mustangs. [...]
What say you?

Personally I prefer the USP45 to the HK45. I kind of have a love/hate relationship with the 1911. I love them on the range but they never "stick" with me as a carry gun. First they're pretty heavy and have a low magazine capacity. And after 20+ years of carrying a cocked-and-locked BHP, I have been dragged kicking and screaming into the modern era of guns without a manual safety. For decades I would practice the draw and presentation of a SAA, drawing and swiping off the safety, to ingrain it into muscle memory. But in the back of my mind the idea was there that in the heat of the moment I could forget (and I've seen it happen in gunfights captured on CCV). It has happened to better trained folks that are in professions of arms so it would be foolish to think it couldn't happen to me. If I ever need to use a firearm in the gravest of situations I want less impediments, not more.

It's not a 1911 and will take some getting used to. The single action trigger is decent. Certainly not bad, its consistent, but there's no discernable "break", or no wall at least. The double action trigger is friggin terrible. I like that it can be carried with one in the chamber and the safety off, but that's about it. Shoots where you point it, I'm sure I can get my group size down with a little time with it. Not sold on the paddle mag release, but that's just a training issue. I like the 10rnd mags, 2 more rounds without adding a too much width. I was pleased with the recoil management. It's a good bit lighter than a 1911, but not a great deal more recoil. Definitely more confidence inspiring, I doubt any parts will shake of the HK, although I found adjusting the rear sight on my 1911 to be not too hard of a task. Hard to say which is better, I don't think one is really, they're just different. As for now, I'm glad I didnt sell the 1911 just yet.

I'm very pro 1911. But I would sell and buy the HK ifffffffff you can live with the trigger

I would go with the M1911.

Unless it looks like I might fall in the water, then I'd go with the Glock.
