I posted in another section about taking the 1911/2011 armorers course and got a hankering to dirty up my group of 9mm and .45 1911’s today. I packed up six pistols, a couple of tubs of WWB 9mm and .45 FMJ and a batch of targets and headed to the indoor range.

Of them all, the Kimber Stainless Target II 9mm is the most accurate in my hands, the gun has little recoil and has a good sight picture for me.

The Springfield V-16 .45 Super is a cool gun; a 6” ported longslide that will shoot full power .45 ACP and .45 Super interchangeably (It chokes on wadcutter loads as its sprung too heavily). This also has a good sight picture and a crisp trigger, but i must admit that there is no radiused edge on it at all and the grips are very sharp on the palms. It will chew up the hands or a holster in no time.

This gun did shoot very low at first, even after raising the read sight numerous clicks it still shot low at 12 yds. (I saw the first shot clearly went low, for the rest I brought my POA up.)

With this range-fodder FMJ there was some flash through the 16 ports. With .45 Super loads its really noticeable. The ports work to keep the recoil down, but the heavy slide pretty much cancels any benefit out.

The Springfield Loaded 1911 5” .45 is another good shooter that works pretty well for me. The 230 gr FMJ shot a bit high, it needs more of a 6 o’ clock hold for me once I saw where it was hitting.

The Commander length SR1911 just shoots well for me, POI is center dot/top of post (SIG Sauer-like) which is right where I like it with fixed sight semi autos.

The Ronin 4.25” 9mm shoots like the SR1911 does with the same POA/POI, I just didn’t really shoot it all that well today. Maybe because it was near the end and I was getting punchy, but Ive shot better.

The Kimber Ultra Carry II is, for me, not easy to shoot well. The short sight radius and a generous rear-sight notch are better for quick sight pictures rather than tiny groups, but thats what its made for so Im happy with hitting close to where I want to.

After shooting it took me about two hours to clean them all, oil them up and put them away. I am looking forward to another 1911 day in a month or so.

Anyone else exercise their 1911’s this week?

Stay safe.

Didn't exercise any today but I did choose to carry my Colt Commander this evening, along with my 38 Snub.
Real possibility of civil unrest in the area lately.
I know for a fact I saw an Antifa agitator on Wed evening on my way in to a hockey game. Terrorist hood and body cam...yeah he was up to no good. Mostly Peaceful demonstration nearby.

Dang Were do you live? I’m in Seattle and Antifa are a bunch of WIMPS here!

during unrest, I carry a AR kit in my Prius, and a CZ Shadow 2 IWB. I also can blend in and play the role. I can escape any situation but if I had to… no comment

Awesome. I've wanted a longslide 1911 for years now, ever since I first seen an AMT Hardballer Longslide. Though I believe those were 7" and had galling issues... Still, someday.
Fusion Firearms makes a really nice Longslide, though pricey!

I still kick myself for not picking up a super nice Essex-framed 7" custom build years ago.

Blend in and play what role? The role of BLM/Antifa looters/rioters? Escape a situation you put yourself in?

In Seattle/Portland, you'd be the aggressor if you ever fired a single round. Look to Kyle Rittenhouse in lowly Wisconsin where it was clear self defense. Dont let them fool you, they are not "wimps", they're real people that cause real damage that we, the tax payers, pay for.

they hired 1 or 2 criminals to do the dirty work. But all in all, they are a bunch of rich daddy’s money kids.

Escape as in, if I find myself in a protest with mob rule stuff. I can play the role and get out of the situation.

I was not trying to be confrontational with you man. But, if I did I apologize

We can get back to guns, but this is an absolutely false narrative. I was in the middle of the Minneapolis George Floyd riots. I've commuted through it for work many times. They weren't hired guns, they were opportunists who took advantage of unrest. People like you who claim it wasn't "the people" or BLM/Antifa, but hired guns who caused all of this unrest are the problem.

No need to apologize, and it's not necessarily confrontational. Just what I've seen.

I packed up six pistols,
I also tend to take multiple 1911s at one time to the range for some exercise... But maybe I should edit my post in the "Do you enjoy cleaning guns?" thread in GenGun. Because six 1911s is a lotta cleaning. I'd probably have to load up all 10 episodes of Band of Brothers in the Blu-Ray player to get through that cleaning session....

Maybe this week will be a Colt day at the range... or Colt, Kimber, Springfield, Brown and Dan Wesson day at the range...

That's some nice shooting, with some beautiful pistols. What range (distance) were you shooting?

I'd sent my 9mm SA EMP4 back to Springfield a few weeks ago, I had too many instances of failures to feed or not lock into battery. I got it back last week, so I grabbed it and two other pistols and headed to our wildlife club's pistol range. I didn't shoot any targets with the EMP4, I was more concerned with running a bunch through it and see if it functioned better, and it did. SA reamed the chamber, re-cut and polished the feed ramp, pinned the ejector and tuned the extractor.

The other two pistols I took were my RIA 1911GI model in .38 SuperAuto, and my MkIII BHP in .40 S&W. I shot two magazines full (18 rounds) with the Super at 15 yards, and two more at 25 yards. The sights being sort of small on the GI Super, and my bifocals and astigmatism "assisting", I still managed to get everything in center mass.

Do you clean your guns after every visit to the range?
Shooting that many (6), approx how many rounds through each pistol?
I do clean after almost every use. I got into the habit when I was a kid, the habit was reinforced in the police academy and I just prefer to store (or carry) a gun that’s cleaned and oiled. Others may not be so fastidious about cleaning. Thats fine by me, we are all different so its no sweat off my nose.

I have a pretty efficient cleaning routine, it takes me about 10 to 15 minutes to break down, clean, oil and reassemble a 1911. It may not pass a DI’s thorough white glove exam in the military, but my guns wont embarrass me if someone wants to check it out and they will be ready to roll the next time I break one out to go shoot.

On this trip I ran about 250 each of .45 ACP 230 gr FMJ and 9mm 115 gr FMJ, so roughly 80 shots per gun. (Its getting pricy :()

Most of my trips I bring a .22 rimfire or two and shoot a couple hundred of those, but I dont have a 1911-style rimfire for a 1911 day so I left them at home. :).

Stay safe.

I try to shoot 7-10-12 yards for most of my handgun shooting. The lighting at the indoor range i frequent isn’t the greatest, so seeing the sights can be a challenge. ( I really “pattern” all over beyond 15 in there!)

I had access to a 50 yard outdoor pistol range for many years and would shoot at 25-35 yards a lot (We shot monthly and also qualified 3x a year so I was a lot more consistent.) When I promoted several years ago into an admin guy, I’m pretty much desk-bound. I will occasionally spend a day shoot at further distances, but those days aren’t too common anymore :(.

Stay safe.

Having only shot at one indoor range in the past several decades I have a suggestion; ask after or find your own pink silhouettes. They’re becoming more popular I guess as ranges assume either women love pink or their male chaperons do. With the abysmal lighting I can see those being easier to acquire sights on, especially at distance.

I was all set to 1911 it up today when my shooting buddy brought out a special something for its maiden trip and I completely forgot about my load out for the day. I had grabbed my 10/22 and was fortunate to have the BuckMark in my range bag for drills.

I only ran 5 rounds through and I didn’t shoot for squat (not even blaming wind at just 25 yards) but I could see it had potential!

Yeah I would have to go with that assessment as well! Definitely some sort of potential there!

Oh, and nice shooting too!

Would something like this work for you in a 1911-style .22LR for a 1911 type day?

It's my pieces part gun that I built with an Essex frame, mostly Colt parts on the inside, and a TacSol 2211 conversion assembly on top.
