I posted in another section about taking the 1911/2011 armorers course and got a hankering to dirty up my group of 9mm and .45 1911’s today. I packed up six pistols, a couple of tubs of WWB 9mm and .45 FMJ and a batch of targets and headed to the indoor range.
Of them all, the Kimber Stainless Target II 9mm is the most accurate in my hands, the gun has little recoil and has a good sight picture for me.
The Springfield V-16 .45 Super is a cool gun; a 6” ported longslide that will shoot full power .45 ACP and .45 Super interchangeably (It chokes on wadcutter loads as its sprung too heavily). This also has a good sight picture and a crisp trigger, but i must admit that there is no radiused edge on it at all and the grips are very sharp on the palms. It will chew up the hands or a holster in no time.
This gun did shoot very low at first, even after raising the read sight numerous clicks it still shot low at 12 yds. (I saw the first shot clearly went low, for the rest I brought my POA up.)
With this range-fodder FMJ there was some flash through the 16 ports. With .45 Super loads its really noticeable. The ports work to keep the recoil down, but the heavy slide pretty much cancels any benefit out.
The Springfield Loaded 1911 5” .45 is another good shooter that works pretty well for me. The 230 gr FMJ shot a bit high, it needs more of a 6 o’ clock hold for me once I saw where it was hitting.
The Commander length SR1911 just shoots well for me, POI is center dot/top of post (SIG Sauer-like) which is right where I like it with fixed sight semi autos.
The Ronin 4.25” 9mm shoots like the SR1911 does with the same POA/POI, I just didn’t really shoot it all that well today. Maybe because it was near the end and I was getting punchy, but Ive shot better.
The Kimber Ultra Carry II is, for me, not easy to shoot well. The short sight radius and a generous rear-sight notch are better for quick sight pictures rather than tiny groups, but thats what its made for so Im happy with hitting close to where I want to.
After shooting it took me about two hours to clean them all, oil them up and put them away. I am looking forward to another 1911 day in a month or so.
Anyone else exercise their 1911’s this week?
Stay safe.
