So my neighbor comes up to me yesterday and said where the heck was I the day before when he really needed my help. I said I was home... what happened?
He was having issues with the transmission leaking in his car and was filling the level and reading his owners manuel... it said he needed to go thru the gears for some reason and that's what he was doing in the street in front of his house in a quiet suburban neighborhood. all of a sudden he hears the passenger side door open and close and is shocked to see a teenage male in the car with him. the teenager didn't show a weapon but demanded to be driven to his sister's house... after a few minutes it became obvious that the kid wasn't from this area so the neighbor dropped him off a few miles down the road...
It really wouldn't have taken much for this situation to escalate in a bad directon... He is an older guy 68 years old and has a CHL but figured that since he was just in front of his house He wouldn't need his 9mm... He didn't have his cell either... He could have called me and I always have mine on me and an AK is never far from me.
I don't know about you but anybody jumping in my ride on my property and demanding a ride would most certainly make me feel in fear of my life. and I don't think I would have hesitated in using my Glock.... it was a very real reminder to A.B.C. ALWAYS BE CARRYING!!! even to just check the mailbox... you NEVER know what will greet you even in front of your house... Always have a cell phone on you so you can call for back up... and be aware of your surroundings...

I've had guys approach me in my driveway also, usually to ask for a "couple of bucks 'cuz my old lady just threw me out" or something. I always stop them before they get close and order them on.

And, I've always got something on, even if it's a little .22.

better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it... when I don't have my regular concealed holster and Glock, I have a "fanny pack" that I always put on with 40 cal in it for 2 legged threats and a can of pepper gel on the belt for 4 legged threats...
no excuse to not put on a fanny pack... I've had to use the pepper gel a few times in front of my house on stray dogs and escaped dogs... I don't do well with loose dogs without tags acting aggressivly especially on my property... I will say it is the funniest thing to see a dog go from aggressive to running 3 houses down and rubbing their face in the grass when it gets sprayed with pepper gel... that stuff is nasty when you are on the receiving end...

In that situation in such close quarters, drawing might be tough.

Bad situation, glad nothing worse happened.

Calling for "back up" would probably also not be an option.

bad situation all around... situational awareness and problem prevention are key... but it would have been better to be armed and have something to draw then be an easy target... I said he should have said to the guy that he needed to "call his wife" before leaving and in a code said to me to come out armed... I would have ran out with an AK... probably not what you want to see in your neighborhood but as I said bad situation all around...

Great idea, do you guys already have a "code"? I saw a comedian talk about doing that once. Whenever he was with his fiance and his buddy called he would immediately mention that he was hungry and wanted Subway so his bro would know not to say anything dumb :D

In your case, he probably could have said something like, "Hey honey *cough* errr I'm gonna head out to the drive way and *REALLY OBVIOUS FAKE COUGH* go to the store for some GUN stuff..errr..maybe you could HELP me when I get back *sarcastic cough cough*...I'll be gone NOW...you hear me darling?!" (Repeat as necessary)

But that's just the screenplay writer in me that never fully developed...probably for the best ;)

68 year old vs a teenager... unknown if the kid was armed or not... He wants to enjoy his retirement starting in 2015. bad situation as I said... his house was broken into maybe 6 months ago... unknown if this was one of the people involved in that. it's crazy how fast life can change on you...

I understand that your neighbor is older, but why didn't your neighbor get out of the car and call the cops? Driving away with this guy was extremely extremely high risk. Stupid comes to mind. Sorry but I'm not pulling any punches. Hell, I've drilled it into my wife's head that if someone ever points a gun at her to have her go with them...she's probably better off getting shot going for her gun. There are lots of things worst than death.

BTW, I totally agree on ABC. I do during all waking hours. My wife is always armed when outside of the house, including "just" doing gardening. The other day, some guy handing out flyers greeted my wife while she was gardening and approached her. She told him "STOP!" GET OFF MY LAWN and LEAVE!. She's a keeper!

Kid was in th passenger seat.
Pull the keys and get out drivers side.
Plenty of room to draw if necessary.

Verbal cues; "You got about 10 seconds to find somewhere else to be" tend to come in handy.

I rarely carry a handgun anymore, but I alwayshave a belt clipped UDAP and a 6" fixed blade hooked on my pocket. Spray UDAP first (its oil based bear spray :)) and then defend myself with the knife if the situation arose.

Ya, I also carry a blade, usually something small and easy to deploy, like a switch blade or butterfly, they are legal in my state. But in addition to either of the two defense blades, I also carry a small folding knife on my belt.

It's scary how many people who carry feel that a gun is the only answer. As a sidenote, have you ever tried drawing your Glock inside your car? You really believe that you can get it out and pointed at the passenger before he has your wrist and is fighting you for it? A teenager against a 68 year old man, there's a good chance the teenager would win.

What's wrong with Onward Allusion's approach?

Hard to believe this story. If true I guess you would have shot him. You say they broke into this guys house. Why don't you and him move? Sounds like you in a real bad area

Pocket carry is worthless in a vehicle. So is a folding knife. Presence of mind is the best solution to most problems.

Good advice....

I went by a local Domino's Pizza on Tues afternoon to get a carry-out order.
It was a brief trip(5min) & I didn't take my Glock 21 .45acp with me.
When I went by the strip mall location to get my pizza, I saw a intoxicated patron on the patio of a Applebee's yelling & waving a beer mug around.
The drunk wasn't violent or threatening but doing police & security work, I know how quickly intoxicated subjects can change. I left the parking lot without incident.

The event showed me that trouble can pop up anywhere, at almost any time. :uhoh:

As the topic says; if you have a valid CCW or own a personal protection weapon keep it close just in case.

Hmm. 68 years old, retired, futzing with the car.

Likely a neighborhood he moved into decades earlier. Looked ok then, but it may have deteriorated - ie, the kids are now renting out mom and dads house after they passed away. Kids don't have to live there, they don't much care who does as long as the renters don't trash the place and pay on time.

Guy is not going to be thinking condition Orange just working on his car out in front of his house. He SHOULD have been more aware of who was walking - walking - around in his neighborhood, I see it being suburban with driveways and cars, no sidewalks.

Why you would want a cell phone on you to fall out under the hood or get snagged on the door, whatever, is very much a generational thing. He's 68 and has only likely had one the last 10% of his life. The habit of NOT having one is much more ingrained.

Did the kid not previously call out? Don't know - older men have poor hearing, the engine is running, he's inside the car, windows up or down? It's nearly July, likely up. The kid may well have tried to get his attention. We don't know the actual way he asked - and all we have is a third hand story, not the actual participant.

That alone makes the details here sketchy regardless of how accurate they may actually be. There is nothing from the actual participants, just a retelling of something in potentially dramatic fashion topped off with the caution that WE SHOULD BE CARRYING LETHAL FORCE AT ALL TIMES!

It's about as real as talking about zombies or the end times. No first hand accounts or fact checking. Frankly, there should be some reticence on our part posting items like this - it becomes a game of whack a mole where the "victim" is criticized for not acting like a cop or pro level operator. Cheap sniping.

I see no value to discussing it any further. For every "HE SHOULD HAVE HAD A GUN!" post, there are equal and opposite reasons not to. We choose where we live based on NOT needing a firearm 24/7.

If you DO, then I suggest that counseling is needed.

Not wanting to hijack, but also wanting to keep this in a place where people are concerned about this kinda thing... just spoke with a friend yesterday who was approached inside an atm (which is generally frowned upon around these parts), he asked the upstanding citizen if there was something he could help him with. His only reply was to ask if he had any weapons or a knife on him. Being the funny bastard he is, he slid back his vest to reveal his 1911 and said," just this". Upstanding citizen left without further dialogue. Attempted carjacking two weeks before at same mall also in broad daylight. Very nice town by local standards, but not far from a city with not such a good reputation.
Same guy got backed into shed in the middle of night after breaking shovel cleaning his driveway. Was rooting around making a lot of noise and when he emerged 3 growling coyotes were doing the low crawl to him. He backed in and shut the door and noticed the growling was getting louder. Luckily for him hes a BP revolver nut and decided to carry a hoss on his side while shoveling. Opened the door and shot the lead dog which after a little quivering, drt. Went in house and investigated in the am and discovered the dog had been consumed and the snow where blood had been spilled was eaten to the dirt.
He is a good example of ABC. I need to follow suit a little more religiously.
