Hello, I recently posted about replacing a decade old spiderco as my daily beat it into the ground knife.
Turns out I actually only hid it from myself temporarily and stumbled across it by accident many days later.
I got several excellent responses here on Benchmade knives so upon finding it I found myself still wanting to purchase a decent knife. I figure I couldn't hide two knives at once and besides, the spyderco needs some factory love. Long over due really.
Well, I'm fooling myself, I could easily lose both knives but that's not anyone ones problem but mine....
So I went out recently and found myself at a local Cabelas, my son enjoys the fish, taxidermy displays and more importantly the elk/buffalo burger's.
I wandered to the knives and ended up with the full size griptillian.
The handle is pure ****e.
I understand there is much snobbery in knives as there is in say mountain bikes, hand tools, hiking gear, guns, etc.
ive found much of that to be general nonsense mostly. Not always, but often.
Ive always abused cheap knives and while they may not last quite as long they do cut stuff and can be sharpened. The Spyderco was my first "good"knife and it was a gift.
I do have a question, I swear, Ill curtail the rambling and ask if its possible to upgrade the handle at all or if nit has anyone ever added a rubberized coating similar to the stuff you dip tool handles in to a plastic handled knife ?
So called griptillian feels cheap, is actually quite slippery when wet(common for me) and overall Sucks.

Buy some skate-board tape at a head shop, or stair / bathtub traction tape at the hardware store for a $dollar buck 98.

Tape won't stick to the [strike]FRN[/strike] Noryl GTX surface very long.

O.K.

I gave up on the first Griptillions about 10 years ago when the clips kept breaking off.

So what do I know about them?

It's been mostly textured G-10 Benchmade scales for me from then on Babeee!

I was worried about the grip when I bought my griptillian as well, but knowing how good the Benchmade warentee is I figured if I had a problem they'd fix it. I have now carried it almost everyday for five years and it is my go to knife for things I don't want to do with my other knives (including my leatherman). I've never had trouble with the grip but everyone's different. Don't know about replacement grips but for a rubberized coating you could look into "liquid electrical tape".

Sorry that you are not happy with the griptillian, if you don't want to keep it send me a PM and I would gladly take it off your hands for the right price.

I was a little skeptical about the grips too. They look and feel cheap but that couldn't be any further from the truth. I've had mine for goin on three years now and I think I can count on one hand how many days in there it wasnt clipped inside my pants pocket.

I've had to tighten the pocket clip a few times, the tip is broke (not a prybar), the black blade is scarfed up and some of the serrated teerth broke. But this knife has seen pretty hard life. I bought it to test it out really. I didn't really like the CRKT I used to carry and wanted a quality knife I could beat the hell out of.

I won't bore you with all of the terrible things I've done to this knife, I'll just sum up and say it's extremely durable. I'm about to buy another one and put it in the safe just incase I lose mine and they don't sell them in the future.

I have several. I picked up 2 of the older versions at a heavily discounted price a few years back made with 440C blades. Have 2 of the mini versions. One with 154CM blade and the other from Cabelas with D2 steel. I do not like the one with D2 steel, but the others are used heavily. Never had a problem.

The Spyderco's are good as well. The Griptilians will take more abuse though. Another knife that has impressed me are some of the SOG knives. Not that expensive either.

I tried to wear out a Mini Griptilian but I didn't get it done so I bought another Benchmade ( Mini Barrage) just because I wanted it. I know these are not the full size knives but I never found them hard to hang on to or control, everyone is different.

FRN is how Spyderco describes its synthetic Fiberglass-Reinforced Nylon handles, which are different than any of Benchmade's Griptilian handles, but similar to some of their HK line.

I'd wait until you use it to decide if you need to do something to the grip. Mine gets used every day and the grip has not been a problem. Now the tip breaking and the edge dulling quickly are a different matter. I have a mini griptillian w/ the D2 blade.

Yep, Benchmade uses Noryl GTX. I think the Noryl product they're using is a glass reinforced blend of PPE and PPA polymers instead of nylon in fiber reinforced nylon. It may not be glass reinforced, though. It gets used in the automotive industry so anything that sticks to polymer car parts would probably work.

I've got a Mini Grip that feels very high quality to me. I had to send the first one back due to blade play, but the second one is perfect. I'm not grip sensitive, like some seem to be. People complain about the slickness of the Barrage and Barrage Mini (I have both), but I love them both and they feel great in the hand. To each their own. The Mini Grip doesn't feel like sandpaper, but I've no issues with its gripability.

Unlike the mini, the full-sized griptillian has a hollow handle. I think it's the hollowness that give the impression that it is cheap and fragile.

Like other posters have said, just give it a little time - chances are, you'll find that it's a sweet little knife that's easy to under-appreciate at first. I've carried one as my primary EDC for a few years now and I love it.

I like that you can open and close it one-handed, just by opening the lock and giving it a little flick.

Some quality responses, thanks everyone!
Ive been making a point to use this knife as much as possible the last couple of days and while the blade has been more than wonderful I still would like a grip with more, um, I don't know, tactile feedback maybe?
Maybe its a heft issue as the spyderco is all stainless and I'm rabidly anti plastic in all things unless there's a rubbery coating.
Stainless is not known to be anything other than hard cold and slick so perhaps its the particular shape of the handle with its notches, grooves, etc that allow me to never recall any slipage issues.
Or maybe that's stainless steels greatest attribute, I don't have facts here.
Ill look into coating the handle some more and if successful will provide details.
again, thanks for the great responses!
