So I'm wondering, how easy or difficult is it for a knife to lose its temper?
How hot in general would it have to get before you would worry about it?
I'm asking because I have a cheap Remington FAST fixed blade and I thought it would be fun to try and reprofile the blade to something more useful without the serrations. I bought 3 of them a few years ago and they were pretty cheap so I figure it would be a good knife to experiment on since I have 2 others incase I botch this one. I used a dremel with the grinding wheel to get rid of the serrations and a the high speed cutoff wheel to trim the spine alittle bit. It got pretty warm but I had gloves on so I dont know exactly how hot it got, but at times I could feel the heat through the gloves alittle, but not to the point that I had to put it down or anything. Also, it didn't get hot enough to make the metal change colors.
Can a knife be heat treated again if it lost its temper? Also, what is a ballpark figure to have someone heat treat knives? This is mostly for future projects on untreated metal (assuming this one turns out well), but if I messed up the heat treat on this knife I'd consider having it re-treated if it was pretty cheap (and at all possible).
Also, I'd love some pointers and advice from any of you that have done something similar or even make your own knives.
