I have been looking through Browning pistols on their website and I have not noticed a 1911 platform pistol. I figured since John Moses Browning designed the 1911 and I've had good experience with browning products it would be interesting to see, but I can only find buckmarks and hipower pistols on their site. Since the patent expired, can't any gun manufacturer churn out a 1911 and does anyone know why browning doesnt make one?

Edit: whoops sorry. I did mean John Moses Browning.

I don't know the reason why today.
But Browning has never ever made a 1911.
Early on, John Browning had sold the patent to Colt's Manufacturing for the commercial version of the military design and they couldn't make them.

Then after WWII the market was flooded with stolen & DCM surplus GI guns at $17.50 a pop.

They would probably be foolish to do it now with half a gazillion clones already being made in every conceivable price bracket by everyone else.

If they did I am sure it would be a 1000 dollar pistol. Add to the fact they already make the Hi Power which is a 1000 dollar pistol. I bet it would be of excellent quality and if they used that deep blue they do for everything it would be completely beautiful too.

I would rather them stay out of that market though if they can. With FN running things now though who really knows.

Yes, FN would be the maker, Browning the importer. I would love an FN/Browning 1911, especially if it was stainless.

So long as it does not have the same cookies cutter features that the other "semi-custom" 1911's have. If it looks just like a Kimber or Wilson, it ain't gonna sell. If it's just like a Colt series 80, it probably won't sell either, unless they can get into Colt's price point. I would prefer a gun with a dovetailed front sight though.

And I hate guns with any type of beavertail !

I asked the same question a while ago. Since everyone including S&W, Taurus, and Sig are now in the 1911 game, why not the company that bears the name of the designer?

The logical answer I got was that it is not in Browning's interests to make competition for its own pistols with a gun that the Browning brand was not associated with.

I'd say that FN simply wanted to push the Hi Power design. They didn't need to get into the competitive 1911 market when they had their own lines of highly successful pistols. Now, I'm sure they're focusing on pushing the FNP series (trying to line up military and police contracts no doubt), having spent all that money on developing them.

The closest thing to a 1911 Browning original would be an original 1911 Colt as they were the first to manufacture the 1911. Then expanded to others Springfield Armory, Remington Rand, Ithaca Gun Co., Union Switch & Signal, Singer, Rock Island Arsenal to name a few.

A Browning 1911 would be a beautiful thing though where it to ever come into existence, guaranteed. I would imagine it would be quite high dollar though... +$2k. I would do whatever I could to get one. I doubt they ever will, considering the competition and the small market that would purchase a 1911 in that price range. A man can always dream though. I think if anything that would be a fitting thanks just to honor the man who's designs changed the world of guns forever.
