I got this from my grandfather while I was home on Leave, and was wondering if I could get some questions answered.

Is there anyway to get an appoximate "DOB"? He is a retired LEO, and said he carried this as his duty weapon for a while. Only markings are "Taurus PT 92 AF 9mm para." on one side of the slide, "Taurus Int Mfg, Miami, FL. Made In Brazil" on the other side, and the serial on the frame.

Where would the best place to get rubber grips be, and i would prefer to get wrap arounds with finger grooves.

How would be the best way to refinish the grips that are on it? They are a little beat up, but I would like to keep them.

Also, it came with 2 15 round mags, I was wondering where the best place is to get more, and if anyone has any experience, with any mags with a higher round capacity( ive seen 17,18,20, and 30 rd mags)

Hogue and Pachmayr makes grips for it (and the Pach's have a finger groove frontstap), but they will make this pistol even fatter than it is with the stock grips. I refinished my grips by just stripping the stock finish and wiping on Fornby's satin Tung Oil varnish.

I use MecGar mags in mine, and they work flawlessly.

Yeah, those grips have had some hard service. You can buy a Formby's furniture restoration kit at Wal-Mart. That would be PLENTY to do a dozen+ sets of grips. Or, just get what's in the kit and do it yourself.

Check Taurus' website. I believe it has a dating link there.

Considering yours is not with a decocker, I would put it at mid 80's or older.

The good folks at www.taurusarmed.com will have a plethora of info for you.

FWIW, I had a slightly newer model of PT92, with a decocker, and loved the gun. Put Pachmayr grips on it and it was too thick. But, by that time I had lost an original so I had to keep the Pach grip. Foolishly, I sold the gun to a fellow Houston-area THR member.

Not only do you have a good looking gun, you have a neat piece of family history.
