saw a bunch of .22 rifles today...
trying decide which one i would be better off with...
remington 597 ($180 w/scope)
savage 64fxp ($130 w/scope)
saw a few marlins too ($130-150 no scope)
any opinions?
or other suggestions?

My son loves his Marlin 981T and he's had it for around 9 years now. I understand Marlin's new XT rifles come with a really nice trigger. If they'd been around when he was a teenager I'd have bought one instead of the 981T. I'm fond of bolt action tube fed rimfires.

Plinking shotgun hulls off a fence at 50 yards is easy-peasy.

The Remington & Savage included scopes are both pretty cheap models, so I wouldn't put much added value there. I prefer the Marlins (particularly the 795) to the listed Remington & Savage.

Love my 10/22
Wish I'd never sold my Marlin Model 60
That old Stevens I'm refinishing is a fun one.

I find the actions on the 10/22 and model 60 to both have about the same taste for ammo. They both hate Blazer and love Remington. But I think the model 60 could handle the Blazer better than the 10/22.

I own a Marlin Model 60 (Christmas present from my parents, and my first firearm). I like the 795 because it's essentially a detachable box magazine fed version of the Model 60. If you up the budget to the low 200s then the Ruger 10/22 is a great option for those who want higher capacity mags & the ability to customize it anyway way your imagination can think of - if your wallet will tolerate it of course. :D

I've got a Mossberg 702 and a Savage .22 semi auto bought from Walmart. While both are awesome rifles and have served me well the Savage is the better deal because it has a longer barrel, is deadly accurate (ask the armadillos), and higher fire rate for some reason. IMO most modern manufacture .22 rifles will last a lifetime so I wouldn't worry too much.

I'm totally digging my Ruger 10-22. Just put a rail and 1.5-4.5x Bushnell scope. Need to zero it in, lovely weather, just need to make it to my brother's range (rod and gun club).

Try looking at a CZ

tonytuna, Several posters have suggested the CZ line of rifles. I own two CZ 22lr's, a 453 American and a 452 FS. Great looking rifles and accurate right out of the box. If this is someone's first rifle, I have attached a link to the CZ-USA sight for a CZ-513-Basic. Great looking rifle with a beechwood stock and IMHO would make a great entry level rifle and MSRP is $299. Take look.

For a first rifle, I'd go Savage, Marlin or CZ in a bolt action. Semi autos are fun, but some will choke on sub sonic ammo, which is what you'll need to run if you want to see what a .22 will do.

cz 452 trainer is a great first rifle built to last and accurate out of the box

Don't have any experience with the Savage but do with the following.

Ruger 10/22 about $200 for the basic model (detachable box mag= DBM)

Marlin 60 about $150 for the basic model (tube fed)

Marlin 795 about $105 after factory rebate (DBM)

Remington 597 $160-180 depending on scope or not (DBM)

IMO, the Ruger is the most versatile and probably my overall favorite 22.

I have two Mod 60, but they don't get used much because of the tube feed. Not very handy.

Mod 795, is short and light weight. It is reliable and very accurate. It is hands down a sleeper and best bang for the buck.

The 597 is a nicer full size rifle. It is priced right and will serve you well.

My experience with a couple of Savage rifles is that they are incredably decent for the money. If you're after a cheap plinker with a bit of aid from a scope the 64fxp package you looked at should be all you need and I expect you'll be more than happy. For something like kicking a pop can out away from you for as far as the naked eye can see it these rifles will be just great. For small varmint or game hunting in decent light out to medium ranges they should similarly be just fine.

If you're looking for a serious accuracy gun that'll reach out to 100 to 150 yards or more and put all the rounds into something the size of a quarter then none of the guns you listed are great options. But then if this is what you're after then you'd likely be looking more at bolt actions and better quality scopes.

Get a CZ 452 before they are all replaced with the 455. The 455 may turn out to be a great rifle but has had some less than stellar reviews in the first runs.

I've had both a marlin M60 and a ruger 10/22, both are well beyond reproach. the marlin was most compact and accurate, the 10/22 had more rapid reload, mroe reliable with mroe types of ammo and more aftermarket parts on it's side. I dont know anything about the savage or remington but the marlins are good choices

I absolutely love the 10/22, mine has been the best gun that I have ever owned. It seems that ruger has pretty iffy quality control though, either you get a good one or a bad one. I have a very good one and other than a possible trigger job i won't be changing a thing on it ever. I can easily with one or two shots shoot little limbs out of trees to get hornet nests down or whatever.

i've owned lots of guns, sold and traded off all of them over time, except for that one. so that says something...

their quality control is definitely off, me and my stepdad both bought a p89 at the same time, I could hit bottle caps with his, mine was dinner plate grouping... needless to say, he wouldn't trade ;)
