I managed to shoot a new personal best today. Usually I shoot 30 to 50 shots at the same target, but I brought this one in after 10 shots since I was afraid I'd ruin the group if I kept going.

I've suspected some 10 shot groups like this in the past, but couldn't prove it because they were the second or third magazine into the same target mixed with some prior flyers.

Very nice Pappy John.

I too had a good day at the range. As reluctant as I am to share this, I have not shot my SA 1911 in over a year. Prior to that, I had been having a heck of a time keeping my goups at POA. Allways low and to the left.

Well, I changed to Chip McCormick thin grips (look really nice BTW) replaced the arched mainspring with a flat one, and after the year layoff, I'm shooting to POA. This pleases me very much as I thought I was looking at giving up on the 1911 as a shooter because of my poor technique. Not sure if it was due to the grip change or the lay off, but it worked!

As an extra bonus, I took a friend's buddy with us who could not shut up about his H and K yada... yada... yada... $1200.00 .45acp. I was surprised he shot very poorly (all over the 2'X2' paper target), as he was in the Army and allways touted him self as some kind of crack shot. But considering he went AWOL and was discharged under OTHC (Other than Honorable Conditions), who knows.

To boot, I did not make him feel better when I had a 2" group with his gun, after he already commited to changing the adjustments on the factory fresh sights because "I know I shoot better than this, these sight are off".

Yes, not very flattering on my part, but he really is a loud mouth.

Happy Shooting, and see ya at the range!

Pappy,
Tell us more about your Ruger there. Very interesting looking set up. I've only seen one of those short barrel models in a gunstore case - and I thought it must have been some kind of custom job. And those sights - what in the world are those?

Excuse my ignorance, but my Ruger is the old "Standard Model", almost 30 years old, 4 & ?? inch barrel with standard iron sights. Since it shows no signs of ever wearing out, I haven't been keeping up with the modern variants of this classic pistol.

It started out as a P-4 model of thier 22/45, a polymer framed version of the bull barreled MkII with the grip set at an angle to match a 1911 grip and a 1911 style button mag release.

While they got the angle right, the grip feel was too hard and narrow. I wanted something that more closely matched the feel of my 1911 style Kimber. So I spent some time in my shop grinding off the polymer serations that were molded into the grip and fitting some cheap rubber 1911 aftermarket grip panels. I also ground off that silly euro-nipple that they put onto the trigger guard. I just don't find it to be of any use and it's ugly to boot. I dropped a spare pair of Ruger medallions that I had laying around on my workbench into the grip panels to give them a more finished look.

The sight is an Optima 2000 3 MOA plastic bodied red dot sight. They were fairly cheap when I bought it, but now they're out of business. There is a German company making a look-a-like out of metal called a Doctor Sight, but I hear they're pretty pricey.

Well Pappy, it's certainly a very unique and attractive package. Most new guns are like new cars with me anymore - nothing much turns my head. But yours really caught my eye.

Good looking, accurate, cheap to shoot and a good understudy for your .45. Looks like you've got an all around winner there.

Thanks for shareing with us.

One of these days, Soda. I'll make it to a S.E. Pa or Delaware shoot yet. If I remember right, the last one conflicted with fall turkey season or we would have met then. And I'll be sure to bring it along.;)

Cool gun! How is that Optima mounted? Did you use the dovetail for the rear sight or some other mount?
