So I found some old M16A1 Army qualification targets in the shed today.
I was going to do some yard work, but changed my mind after I found these....lol

For years, I've listened to people tell me that AK's suck and don't shoot as well as M16/M4's. So I decided to have a go at these 40-round qualification targets since I didn't feel like doing yard work anyways today.

So I grabbed my tape measure and measured out 25 meters for these targets.
Set up a super dooper tactical brick and a bag and just went for it.

Guns used were Arsenal 7.62x39 SLR95 & Arsenal 5.45x39 SGL31.
For some reason I missed twice with both guns. But still, 38 out of 40 isn't bad with either one.

Either way I had fun and AK's don't suck.
:D

Very nice!

I've noticed a number of avid shooters who've been heading into quality AK territory and away from the old AR. Probably ammo has a lot to do with it, but there's much to be said for a platform with no malfunction drills more complex than swapping mags and pulling the slide again.

Last modern military match I fired my Yugo M70AB2, off hand 100 yards, standard 100 yard target, best ten-shot target I fired was 74 out of 100. Not spectacular, but I have on a good day held my own against shooters with Garands and M4s.

People undersell the accuracy of the Kalashnikov platform based on myths. Some owners don't even bother to zero their sights. I did on a measured 100m range.

Exactly. Either that or they go buy a parts bin gun slapped together for cheap with worn out, mis-matched, used parts and then complain because the rifle doesn't perform well.

Nice shooting and two nice set-ups with your Arsenals AKs.

I also liked the Tactical Brick.

Nice shooting.

I have Saiga's and I let my brother shoot one the other day. He's on a rifle team and shoots AR's off hand at 200m with iron sites. He typically leads the team. He nailed it every time at 100m with my AK and irons. I think he was surprised at the accuracy. And I also saw what it can do in the hands of an extremely good shooter. I'm not bad but my brother is an expert.

I plan to buy another and load for it. Best I could get out of my Arsenal and Saiga was 3" @ 100m

I still prefer AR's but the AK is a fine firearm.

one thing I rarely see when firing an AK for accuracy is using handloads. that gun shot real good with steel cased ammo I would have loved to see it shoot some handloads

My eyes can't hold the AK's sights like they could 15 years ago, but there are a variety of very nice Russian optics available these days that clamp right on the side.

I'm the same way. I have a Krebs peep on the 7.62 and really like it even though I was using the Aimpoint this time. I plan on installing a Krebs on the 74 as well. I find them easier to use than the factory AK sights.

My Russian Arsenal 74 holds five round 2" groups with 7N6 all day. It actually shoots tighter groups with the 7N6 than the hornaday 5.45.

NOthing is wrong with the AK . One has to learn to like the open sights on them. The trick is to get your eyes and cheek weld as close to the rear . Pull trigger slowly towards the back and not to either side.

my own experience with AKs have been less than exemplary. I gave up on the platform and decided to instead go to the not as popular rival, the SKS. my cheap POS SKS outshoots any AK I ever held. that is not to say that there are not good ones out there and I try not to bash on AKs too much but that's just been my personal experience.

whatever floats your boat I guess. good shooting.

I've actually noticed the complete reverse. seems like people are abandoning the AK in droves, I noticed this right around the time WASRS and tantals became more expensive than M&Ps and sporticals. also, I believe that there's a little phrase "tap, rap, and BANG" that was coined in regards to clearing a stoner rifle. tap the mag(or change mag if you prefer), rap the charging handle, and engage target. the only difference is a right handed shooter can do this with the AR without having to remove the firing hand or tilting the firearm.

My AK shoots right around 2" (actually right under) at 100y IF you discount the ONE flier that always pops up. The flier opens it up to about 3 inches. I'm suspecting it is the ammo as I have only tried shooting groups with Wolf. I'm actually tempted to try some reloads and see what it can do but I already have precision rifles for that type of work. There are plenty of poorly made AKs out there to make people believe they are inaccurate junk but the fact is there are many really good ones that will hold their own with other carbines. (Mine is a converted Siaga btw). My AK does everything I would want within 200 yards, probably further. Any further out than that and I prefer a bolt action 308.

Yep. Whatever floats your boat too I guess. I personally have no love for the SKS at all. And you must have had some junk AK's. That's all I can figure really.

I've never heard of rapping the charging handle on an AR either actually.
That would not do a single thing.
Is that something they teach in the Navy?

The correct malfunction procedure is S.P.O.R.T.S......
Slap...in the magazine
Pull...the charging handle to the rear
Observe the chamber for jammed round(s)
Release...the charging handle and let the bolt carrier fly forward again
Tap....the forward assist
Shoot....the rifle again
