Local Walmart had 2 boxes of Winchester 20 round 5.56 and 50+ boxes of 20 round 7.62X39 here. Was the first time I have seen either this year there.

LGS is also getting lots more ammo in

I might start to believe the "scare" is over when I begin seeing P-Mags get passed by as they hang on the hooks at Cabela's.

....or when stripped AR lowers get below $150 again.


Either will be a welcome sign.

At the gun show yesterday, stripped Aero Precision lowers were selling for $139. That's not too bad considering no having to wait, and no paying for shipping to Alaska. Same vendor had loads of P-Mags priced at $17 each. Saw lots of guys checking 'em out and moving on without buying, including me. And my LGS has had a bunch of Troy, Pro-Mag, Lancer, and Thermold mags hanging on the rack for the past week.

It will still take a while for the supply chain to fully rebound from the spike in demand, especially regarding ammo. But, the peak demand has passed.

My LGS got some powder and primers in... He doesn't stock a bunch of powder, maybe 100 one pounders max... Anyhow, i picked up some Varget and some Win 748 that I've been wanting to try...

Todays offering at Academy was sparse. They did get some Blazer aluminum FMJ +P
38 special. It was going for $20 a box. There was a lot of 22lr today, three 1600 round cans of CCI mini mags @ $119.99 each and Winchester 50 round boxes were $2.99 each. They also got some Winchester 500 round boxes of 22lr but I didn't catch the price.

We seem to be getting a lot of 22lr and 308 now and I should be happy with the 22lr options but I do need some more 9mm,40s&w,45acp and ,223/556. Hopefully we will cycle back around to the point where 223/556 in bulk was coming in. Same for pistol rounds.

One more observation: I have been looking for 9 luger here in CO pretty much every chance I could get for the last 4-6 weeks with NO success to speak of. Walmart, Dicks Sporting Goods, Bass Pro, Sportsmans Warehouse, JAX, gun shows, etc.

At the gun show the first weekend in april, there was VERY little ammo to be found on any of the tables, and what was there was priced high. Ammo Kan (who sells volume, and at non insane prices) was sold out of 9mm within the first 30 minutes, and the line was well over 100 people I would estimate.

Saturday, I went stupid early (as I was pretty much out) trying to find anything at all. I was third in line, and bought a 1000 roud box of 115g CPHP once fired reloads. It was expensive ($0.38/rd), but I bought it anyway on the grounds that I had been spending too much time, gas, and energy hunting for ammo.

As I walked around the show for about an hour and a half, I noticed that there was ammo on a LOT of tables - WAY more than what was there early in the month.

A few observations:

• It seems like supply is catching up a LITTLE bit with the demand. There actually seems to be more ammo available (still a long way from well stocked shelves however)
• Demand is starting to fall off as people have enough to make an occasional trip to the range. Now that I have 1000 (quite a bit more than I intended to buy), I will be out of the market for quite some time.
• More people seem to be shopping price. I overheard MANY conversations Saturday where someone would pick up a box, and decide the vendor was asking too much, and move on. Certainly, I will not be buying more until I find something at materially less than the price of the 1000 I just bought.

I am here to report that the hording frenzy is still in full swing locally.

A friend called me yesterday to report he & his wife bought the last six boxes (3 box limit) of .40 S&W at Wal-Mart Sunday morning at 6:30 AM.
He was super excited about it.

So, I ask him when he got a .40 S&W pistol?

And he said he didn't get one, and had no plans to get one!! :banghead:

Even if some businesses were told by distributors to expect zero shipments by the end of summer, this reminds me of a merchandizing tactic over a year ago.

It was February of either '12 or '11.
Several distributors told friends to expect about 25%-30% higher retail ammo costs by May, due to higher fuel costs.

That attempt to create an ammo buying spiral never happened. What a flop!

This time, such talk from distributors could easily indicate that they see an end to the price bubble fairly soon, and being so profitable, they will do anything to prolong the anxiety among novice shooters.

.22 is still close to impossible to find here and other calibers are sparse. No sign that things are getting "better".

Went by Cabela's earlier and they had quite a bit of 5.56 and some .22. 3 different brands of 5.56. The Herters was reasonably priced at $6.99 for 20 rounds, steel cased of course. The two brass brands were $9.99.

Went by fort wort cabelas yesterday. Almost no ammo. Only handgun ammo was 327 fed mag.
