Pump

The problem with pump guns....and there have been some very very good ones by FWB, Steyr, Beeman, the 747, et al.....is that they are pump guns. Using one in a match means 60 pumps and air pistol is a game of tens, that pumping adds up and takes a toll.
For plinking....great. For match shooting....not unless everyone else is.

A bit like a biathlon....but with just one person doing it.

This winter I seem to be shooting my pump rifles quite a bit....I have the ability to alter the power for the basement range....just no point in doing more if you don't have to.

I still shoot the springers down there, but I can see how doing all that pumping will get your old heart racing.....no matter what you are pumping :)

Get your mind out of the gutter I was talking about a pistol or rifle....you guys are bad.

The Russian izzy is a match grade pistol and if it had been available back in the day when I shot international air pistol matches at Lockheed (Sunnyvale,CA) I'd have used it right alongside the FWB 65 and 80 I had. I use one in my shop now just to keep my technique, more a nostalgia than anything else. I don't think that my eyes, legs, or bones would let me be competitive.

I also bought a Daisy 747 because I still have a copy of the article that Don Nygord wrote in that old NRA publication "The Precision Rifleman". He had tuned the trigger, added a metal adjustable site and used the durned thing to win the California State Air Pistol Championship in 1978. He shaved me by one point. Anyway, it's an accurate pistol but doesn't have the refinement of the Izzy.

I have used a Daisy 747 and have enjoyed it for several years (back when the price was under $150). If your not looking for anything fancy, they work well. For $600 you can get the 747 for $219 from PA and $380 worth of pellets (especially with PA's buy 3 get 4th free deal).

I have the 2300T and find it more accurate then I am....giving very good groups.

Another vote for the Crosman. It comes in a couple different flavors:

2240: Basic gun with plastic breech and sights - $70
2300KT: From the Custom Shop. You can customize the barrel, breech, grips, and sights. Price ranges from $100 to $250
2300S: Like the KT but with adjustable trigger and power level. $280

Don Nygord.....quite the shooter and quite the gunsmith. Taken from us too early.
About that article....is there any way that I could get a copy...either from you or from another source?
