< I just don't understand this recent obsession with shot actions, and the inference that long actions are practically unusuable.>

I completely agree. Long actions don't bother me a bit and they give more reloading options.

Perhaps it has something to do with the different head size of the round? Perhaps they don't chamber 6.5 because it requires more than just a different barrel chambering but a different bolt or bolt head as well?

I don't think most rifles have the bolt head that tight around cartridge rim, and most American loadings of 6.5x55 use the same .473" head diameter as everything else anyway.

The Winchester 6.5x55 round on my desk measures .472". For comparison the other rounds on my desk that should be .473":

  • Winchester .45 ACP -.474"
  • Winchester .22-250 - .465"
  • Winchester-Western 6mm Rem - .465"
  • FA .30-06 Match - .470"

I use the same shellholder (RCBS #3) for reloading Lapua and Norma 6.5x55 brass as I use for .308 and .30-06. No problem at all with the Lapua brass, but about 10% of the Norma brass are a tight "squeeze". Case head size is simply not a problem.
