So im working on a rifle for my FIL. Its In older m70 pushfeed .270, thats spent its whole life on molokai. Salt air, little cleaning, and getting shot once or twice every week or two.

Lets just say life on the islands is hard on gun barrels.......This one would probably have been better as a smooth bore, then at least there wouldnt be cheeze graters shoved into the bullets rhe whole length.....

Thus they want a new tube installed.
Now with my minimal equipment my go to for barrels is a short chamber prefit. This time i was looking for the fastest way to get this gun turned around, so ordered a new oldstock .270 Colt Light rifle barrel off ebay.
Same threads and shank dia as the m70, but a longer shank which i shortened with my belt sander and a jig i made.

Got the whole thing finshed, reamed to depth, and coated in about a week....I managed to get all the parts and tools in at almost the same time lol.

got it to the range, bore sighted, and took a shot at a 20yd box, and missed low. Checked the brass and everything looked good....except for this

heres a shot of the cal markings on the barrel.

and the second shot IMG_20200530_105903.jpg

What happened as far as i can tell, is this was a .30-06 barrel that go miss marked .270.

I KNOW better than to use parts without checking them thuroughly, but in my rush to get this finished and home, i missed something as obvious as to big a hole in the tube. Had this gone the other way, this could have been significantly more eventful.
As it was it was I touched off a couple more rounds just to see where bullets would go.
and the answer is everywhere....

Ive got a short chambered barrel on order and this ones coming off.
Cant see it being usefull for anything else without a pile of material being removed, or chambering to a larger, longer cartridge, but ill keep it as a reminder to not be stupid and rush.
Now for the two or three month wait.....

Saw that picture and thought it was funny new wildcat, WOW.

It looks more like like a 30-06 reamer was used in a 270 Win barrel? That step down in the neck would have been blown out in a 30 caliber barrel would it not?
I would except rhe barrel shank was about 1/4" too long. So after fitting and reaming, the chamber got moved forward, but some of the neck remained, and with the .270 case being longer it ended up cutting forward into what would have been the throat and lead of the 06 chamber.

Gotcha, that makes sense.

I wouldn't say that, you buy something that is new and chambered you expect it to be right.
Agreed, but as with any part I should have checked it completely. Before installing it, and for SURE before pressurizing it to 60Kpsi.
If this had been a new gun id gotten, i would have checked....or at least i havent failed to check yet.
This was a mistake, a stupid one, that could have been far worse than it was. As it turned out its frustrating and embarasing, but otherwise ok.
Hopefully if someone is contemplating something similar this will be a little reminder, and prevent them from getting to the end of the line before finding the oops.

Understand you may be set on 270, however since the 30-06 and 270 are the same dimensions up to the shoulder, slight angle difference, and longer neck on 270. I imagine a quick pass with 30'06 reamer to open the neck and it's a perfectly good with maybe slightly long leade. Just about every gunsmith on earth can lend you a 30-06 reamer. * barrel is 308 dia right?

Have you actually measured the bore?

Yeah, all ive got for slugging are .35 cal airgun bullets, but they work well enough.
My attempts got .307-308 across the groves...ive got pictures somehwere.

The family wants it as a .270. If it were mine id borrow a 30gibbs reamer from @troy fairweather and go to town lol. Im unlikely to get into another gun that can use this barrel sans work, so its probably relegated to the wall of shame.
