Was invited to join a friend to shoot sporting clays, had never done it before.

I've shot skeet and trap, but have to say I enjoyed this much more. In fact, aside from possibly hunting, i found it to be the most fun I've had with a shotgun.

If you've never done it before, it consists of different areas that you walk to, each with clay bird throwers that throw in different directions. In this course, it was 2 at each station, and with a remote to throw one or both. This place was set up in the woods, and had hills and gullies that had the birds shot at you, away from you, left, right, high, low, etc. The course was 50 rounds, 4 to 6 shots per station.

Worth trying if you're like me and late to the game.

It's fun practice for hunting, I shoot a round of it every fall. Competing in it would be more frustrating than golf, because at least you go into golf knowning a perfect score is impossible.
I believe the quote is, “Golf is a wonderful walk in the park, ruined by a little white ball” or something similar. :)

Clays looks like a lot of fun. Once the ammo idiocy slows I want to start shooting it locally.

Stay safe.

I'm more of a rifle shooter, but enjoy a round of clays a few times a year. Every course is different unlike skeet or trap which is the same anywhere you go. Even the same course can be changed from time to time.

Took a couple of new shooters out recently (nephew & fiance) since they mentioned wanting a gun for home defense. Let them play with a couple of .22s, my 40 S&W, and a couple of shotguns. They are now both addicted to shooting (informal) clays. Pointed out that we have a sporting clays range close by and now I think I may have created a monster.

I like skeet. The targets are the same and the deal is to be able to track them them the same every time. Easier said than done.

I can see why folks like sporting clays and shoot a round or two each year. But, it is frustrating to me.

Don't let my comments frustrate the OP to not shoot sporting clays. It is good we have several different clay games at our disposal to try and play.

My local club has a special New Year’s Day sporting clays shoot, weather permitting. My son and I tried it 2 years ago and from that day we’ve been addicted. We shot in the spring league the past 2 years and I don’t see an end anytime soon. Could use some more ammo though.

I've never tried any of the official shotgun games. Just an old Outers clay bird thrower and a few family members. We usually wait til right after a big rain comes through... That way the ground is nice and soft so we can re-use all the ones we miss. Agree that it's the most fun I've had with a shotgun, short of having a good beagle on a hot track.

I’ve only shot sporting clays at our local club so I’m not sure how other clubs do it. We go out in groups of 6 to 12 shooters depending on who shows up. Its a 3 hour social event with 12 year old kids to 70+ year old grandpas, guy and girls. How many sports can have a diverse group like this compete with each other and enjoy each other’s company at the same time. I recommend it!

I used to shoot in a sporting clays league. It was very challenging and fun. It also is more useful for hunting than skeet or trap and your field gun can be used. Due to injuries I am not so good at it anymore. Last time I shot course it was against the Colorado state champion on a pro course. I couldn't even see some targets in time to shoot. It was fun and challenging but embarrassing to. Lol.
