Here's my latest Michigan Firearms Examiner article. It's a follow up on my last article on CMP Garands.

A look at the best CMP M-1 Garand choices available

"In my last article, How to purchase a M-1 Garand from the Civilian Marksmanship Program, I discussed the procedure to purchase a rifle from the CMP. Since that article was published I've had several readers ask which of the M-1 Garand "grade" options available is the best choice."

You think that the Service Grade is a better value than a Service Special Grade? While I often think the Service Grade is a better choice for most people, I think the Special Service Grade is a far better value.

Also, you didn't explain the differences between the Service Special Grade, and the Special Grade, and there is more than the new barrel. I think that this is important for people to understand.

The Special Service has collector grade metal, with a new stock. This means every single part (minus the stock, obviously) is as it would be from the manufacturer, and is at 95% original finish or better, with bores that are 3 at the throat, and 2 at the muzzle.

Thanks for publicizing the CMP.

They can be. In my case, I got a HRA Service Grade with the original barrel (TE of 2, MW of 1), and all parts were HRA except the bolt, oprod, and trigger group. I swapped the SA parts to a guy who had HRA parts on his SA, and so we now both have Corrects for just the additional cost of shipping the parts.
