Read some of the other items, I posted the follow as a comment about the 3 rules of gun safety:

These NRA rules are meh, I prefer the 4 rules as taught by Jeff Cooper (with my notes in parentheses.)

As taken from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_safety

1. All guns are always loaded. (You always treat every fire arm as if it was loaded, even if you are 99.99% sure it isn't)
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (This includes al parts of my body and my loved ones. TV counts too.)
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target. (The trigger has 1 purpose, making the gun go off. You don't need to touch it otherwise.)
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it. (Know what the hell you are shooting at! Know what's behind the thing you are shooting at!)
5.
The problem with the NRA rules is they don't cover what I do when my gun IS loaded, like my CCW pistol or loaded hunting rifle. People get in the mindset that since they are violating the 3rd rule they might as well walk around pointing their firearm at everybody with their finger on the trigger since they are already violating one rule. You can follow the Cooper rules in any environment, even with a weapon that ready for instant use.

Interesting that you made the point that you prefer Cooper's rules.

Keep an eye out for an article coming up on why I think Cooper's rules are actually more dangerous then the NRA rules. It's too long to explain here, so it will be an article in itself.
