I recently bought one of the M38 Classic Firearms (don't know much about Mosins specifically, but from a general firearm standpoint all the stuff looked good. Thank you Classic.) and picked it up at the pawn shop today.

Coincidentally there was an Mosin M44 there too with a $239 price tag. I inspected it and the bore looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while, the bolt had been welded on to have a turn down handle (looks poor cosmetically), and the receiver had been tapped for a scope mount. Overall this I'd rate this thing in fair-ish condition. The numbers on the butt stock, magazine, and top of the receivers match.

Are there numbers any where else?
Is the $239 price tag a fair price for the condition this rifle is in?

I wouldn't buy it for that. Maybe, maybe if it was in very good original condition, but not with the "improvements" that someone has made. Maybe $100.

The last owner of that m44 didn't clean it well, and probably shot surplus ammo through it, which is fine, except they didn't clean it and it still isn't clean. Also the boogered bolt would make me walk away. If it was just dirty with surplus ammo, not the end of the world. But, that bolt would break the deal for me. If it was that price in great original shape heck yeah I'd buy it. But, in that shape no way man.

Yeah, a badly bubba'd bolt handle drops that value down a bunch. Plus that bore is probably not just dirty, it's probably badly frosted and even pitted. Don't be afraid to negotiate for it. Check the crown, too. If it's not perfect that's another tool you have to negotiate with. Also, drilling and tapping the receiver of a Mosin is not an easy, cut and dry thing to do. There is a good chance it wasn't done correctly.

Not saying you shouldn't buy it. Just giving you some ammo for negotiation :D. I'd say, maybe, $140 top price for a rifle that has been screwed with like that one. Who knows.....it might be a shooter :)

I think I'm just gonna pass. I just thought that maybe it rarity my outweigh it's physical damage. I only got the 38 because I heard it was getting to be rare and get my first Mosin. I figured that this M44 might be my only chance at that version, but it's not worth buying a piece of junk to check that box.

Junk M-44, buy an M-38 while you can. Very handy and packable rifle, lotta power and you carry a rifle more than you shoot it, at least where I live.

If you look around, you'll probably be able find an unmolested M44 for the same price. You did well to avoid that one.

Although the M44 is a better infantry weapon than the M38, I prefer shooting the M38 over any other Mosin model. I really like the size and balance of the carbine-length Mosin sans bayonet.

Caribou, I just bought an M38, it was the reason I was at the pawn shop. Lol. Sergei, I wasn't looking for an M44, but it just happened to be there. I thought if it's something special, I'll grab it. I am really looking forward to shooting my new toy Saturday.

I read your post, fanchismo, I'm just recommending that you get any you can

The have not been available for quite some years, except for lack of finances, a fella should have no reason to stop at just one :D

besides, the ones we got were bought at 69$ each, and the wife sold two duplicates a year ago for 220$ each, so theres no problem with calling them a leathal investment ~~LOL!!~~

You done good, my daughters carry one while berry picking, and they are fun to shoot.
